Submission + - E-Toll Roads Charge For Hidden Orphan (msnbc.com)

DontScotty writes: Besides losing your alleged privacy of movement, now here's a real threat to tuck under your aluminum covered baseball cap. But, this one will be hitting your virtual wallet. For those using EZ Pass electronic toll systems, be wary of the "orphan exit". If the system fails to scan you out of traffic — you pay NOT for the road driven, but the maximum daily (aka lost ticket) rate.

Brian May, Rock Legend, Soon-To-Be Astrophysicist 169

xPsi writes "Brian May, the guitarist for the legendary rock band Queen (age 60), has finally decided to submit his Ph.D. thesis in astrophysics. The title is 'Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud.' From the article: 'May was studying astrophysics at Imperial College when he formed Queen with singer Freddie Mercury and drummer Roger Taylor in 1970. He dropped his doctorate research into interstellar dust as the band met with increasing success.' And, hey, if this whole Rock-n-Roll thing doesn't pan out, at least he'll have something to fall back on."

tyrealhsm writes: For $10 a month added to your bill, you can make unlimited calls anywhere you want. There is no charge outside of the $10. Whenever you are in a WiFi hotspot, you work in a VoIP mode and your calls are free. Need to make a long distance call to relatives? Your call while in VoIP mode is free. The service from TMobile even comes with (after rebate) a wireless router to give you access to unlimited free calls from your house anywhere you get a WiFi signal. So much for the iPhone... Submission + - Houston, We Have a Drinking Problem (hughpickens.com)

Pcol writes: "Aviation Week reports that astronauts were allowed to fly on at least two occasions after flight surgeons and other astronauts warned they were so intoxicated that they posed a flight-safety risk. A review panel, convened in the wake of the Lisa Nowak arrest to review astronaut medical and psychological screening, also reported "heavy use of alcohol" by astronauts before launch, within the standard 12-hour "bottle to throttle" rule applied to NASA flight crew members. Dr. Jonathan Clark, a former NASA flight surgeon, says it's a tradition for crew members to gather for a barbecue on the eve of a shuttle launch, and these gatherings sometimes include alcohol and a toast but that the greater problem is that preparation before a flight can leave astronauts sleep-deprived and overworked. Meanwhile at Frenchie's Italian Restaurant, a popular astronaut hangout in Houston, owner Frankie Camera disputed the reports. "The Mercury astronauts may have been a little more wild (than later ones) but I did banquets for them and never really saw any of them drink so much they were out of control or drunk.""

Submission + - Global Cooling - The other shoe drops (canada.com)

fyngyrz writes: "As always, there are rumbles of discontent from the scientific community with regard to global warming. This article from R. Timothy Patterson, professor and director of the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre, Department of Earth Sciences, Carleton University, lays the overriding mechanism of climate change squarely at the feet of the various solar cycles. In the article, he explains that solar energy impacting the earth is part of the mechanism, while the sun's solar wind drives cloud formation in a complementary cycle that enhances the effect of the actual heat input. But that's not the kicker. The interesting part is he is predicting global cooling, rather than warming."

Submission + - NVIDIA Tesla High Performance Computing Products (pcper.com)

SuperComPute writes: "NVIDIA is taking the wraps off a new product line dubbed Tesla comprising of desktop, deskside and rack mount server based hardware solutions for high-performance supercomputing. They are offering up add-in cards that will install in existing systems, a "deskside" solution that is really dual add-in cards in an external case and 1U rack mount systems featuring up to four of these cards. Basically rebranded G80 graphics cores, the Tesla line up will not have monitor connections and will still use SLI connections for some data communication. Claiming up to 2 Teraflops per 1U server, NVIDIA is hoping that this will make a big impact in the HPC world. PC Perspective has a nice summary of the products being launched today with photos, specs and prices starting at $1500."
