Submission + - Practical examples of using Ajax and Ruby on Rails

An anonymous reader writes: This article takes you through the steps of building a Rails application. It then dives right into using the Ajax features to build the JavaScript code that reads and writes data from the server. Even if you don't envision yourself shipping a Rails application, I recommend that you download one of the Instant Rails or Locomotive applications and try it out. You will have a lot of fun and learn a lot.

Submission + - RIAA Drops Patti Santangelo case

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "The RIAA is seeking to drop its case against Patti Santangelo, Elektra v. Santangelo, in White Plains, New York. This is the case against a single mom, and mother of five, which received a great deal of press attention in 2005. The case was discussed on Slashdot here, here, and here, was on national television here and here, and received a lot of other press coverage as well. See sampling of articles collected here and see Associated Press coverage here. The RIAA's motion seeks dismissal "without prejudice", which means that they could sue her again for the same thing. Their reason is no doubt to try to insulate themselves from liability for attorney's fees, since a dismissal "with prejudice" would make Ms. Santangelo a "prevailing party" under the Copyright Act, hence eligible for an attorneys fees award. See Capitol v. Foster July 13, 2006, Order Dismissing Case and Finding Defendant to be Eligible for Attorneys Fees. "ACLU, EFF, & Others Fight RIAA for Debbie Foster"."

Submission + - Linux launched into space

An anonymous reader writes: The U.S. military just launched Linux into space on its TacSat-2 satellite, shot into orbit on Saturday for the first time. TacSat-2 is a configurable satellite platform that can be stockpiled, then quickly configured and launched in support of tactical operations such as military beach landings. Saturday's launch carries about a dozen "payload" computers, including two that run Linux and power a radio frequency sensor system.

Submission + - Global Strike: ICBMs to Carry Conventional Warhead

FloatsomNJetsom writes: When cruise missiles just aren't fast enough... Popular Mechanics has an interesting look at the Pentagon's proposed solutions to a problem of late: Striking anywhere in the world with precision, and less than an hour lead time. One practical solution: Re-arming Trident II ICBMs with conventional (yet much more precise) warheads. The only problem is that you can't launch one of these without running the risk of starting a nuclear war (on a radar screen, all ICBMs look alike). Another solution: The scramjet-powered, hypersonic X-51. Problem: It doesn't exist outside of experimental models. Bigger problem: Making sure you're hitting the right target.

Submission + - IBM Creates Circuit City store in Second Life

rujholla writes: IBM has built a Circuit City store online in Second Life as a test platform for 3D business intranets. IBM insider article or IBM press Release The first link might be only available to IBM insiders, but is a more extensive story. From the insider article:
While IBM is prototyping and developing in Second Life, the company has a much bigger vision of collaborating with a community in an open source fashion to build out the 3D Internet and create a platform for business, including 3D intranets.

Just as AOL and other Internet service providers were early entryways into the largely undeveloped World Wide Web, Second Life, other virtual worlds and massive multi-player game environments are the precursor to a 3D Internet. IBM's vision of the 3D Internet is one that is open, immersive and makes possible new classes of applications in commerce, government, healthcare, education and other segments that nobody has even imagined yet.
Anyone else getting visions of the internet as imagined in Snowcrash?

Submission + - Christmas Behind an EB Cash Register

amitlu writes: The Escapist is running a holiday-themed feature written by a guy who went through video game retail hell and lived to tell the tale. From the article: ""Where are the foot massagers?" "This is Electronics Boutique," I explain, naively possessed of the illusion that this will be information enough. An uncomfortable moment passes. I wait for him to cogitate. He waits for me to sell him a foot massager. Eventually I add, "We sell videogames.""
