Japan ? I was not talking about Japan but I expect the solution for them will renewables with storage provided by Pumped Hydro as mainland Japan is incredibly steep. The shock of Fukushima has made Nuclear Power no longer an option in the Japanese public's eyes.
Go tell Japan where they are going to run those wires for this "supergrid".
Well I would think they would have to go through the sea of Japan or along the routes of Shinkansen lines
but I don't see this really being a major obstacle really one of finance.
Then there's Hawaii, South Korea, Israel, and so many other places in need of energy where they cannot rely on friendly neighbors to build a large electrical grid to spread out the load of inherently unreliable wind and solar power.
Hawaii will not have a problem they are already heading to renewables, South Korea not sure to be honest
and Israel having visited there many years ago has Sunshine in abundance, it will be and I am not kidding a Solar Superpower the only issue for Israel will be how to store all the power.
Then comes the matter of material and labor needs of these energy sources. One way to measure this is with EROEI, energy returned on energy invested. Offshore wind and solar power in it's various forms cannot support an economy that has become accustomed to the high EROEI that we've relied upon from things like onshore wind, hydro, nuclear, and fossil fuels.
ummm The problem with renewables is not one of not enough power , the return on investment is incredible as its cheap and it creates more power than we can handle,
the question is how to store the energy created for later use?
The US Navy would not ever consider building another aircraft carrier or submarine that did not have a nuclear power plant on board to make it move. The Navy retired the last of their smaller nuclear powered ships in the 1990s mostly out of politics than economics. If nuclear power works to power the floating cities we call an aircraft carrier than why not use them to power the cities we have on land?
In a nutshell ? Cost pure and simple the US Navy spends alot of money on upkeep for those Nuclear reactors. Renewables are just so much cheaper.
As for Submarines the next generation of subs will use Fuel cells powered by Hydrogen and will be almost impossible to find as they will be ever so quiet.
