Assuming 50% efficiency, I think they're using input numbers. Rough math 900kwh month home usage (Google result) 730 hours in a month (Google convert) 900/730 = 1.25 1.25*5*200,000 = 1.23 megawatt hours That's approximately half the 250 number. Obviously I rounded all my math.

Highview say they plan on 60% efficiency from input Electricity used and there are two numbers 50mwh /250mwh - 50Mwh generation and 250 Mwh storage and from what I understand that is actual storage and generation capacity. https://www.economist.com/scie...

You can lose a great deal of energy in the form of waste heat from compression. Heat energy which is pulled from the environment upon expansion - and in some cases even supplied by burning natural gas.

Highview has had at pilot plant in Bury, near Manchester, running since 2018 which has an efficiency of 50% while this new commercial scale plant will have an efficiency of 60% by capturing the heat produced by the compression and using it to reheat the air when it is used to generate electricity. There is nothing new technology wise here as it uses well known technologies used by industry to produce liquid air , the real difference here is using the liquid air to store and generate electricity. https://www.economist.com/scie...

You should look up the differences between propeller and jet engines. tl;dr: Propellers are good at slow speeds. Jet engines are good at high speeds.

If your talking about a very old and very inefficient type of Jet engine called a Turbo Jet than you are correct however if your talking about a
modern Jet engine called a Turbo Fan than you are incorrect as a Turbo Fan gets most of its thrust , something like 90 %, through a Fan
which is powered by a Jet engine core connected to a Turbine.

In many ways a Turbo Jet is a hybrid of a propeller and a Jet engine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

This invention is important because it has less moving parts than an Jet engine which is an incredible feat as a Jet engine is known for
for having few moving parts and the fact that you could in theory run this solely on electricity means the possibly of flight without the weight limitations
of fuel assuming you could get a battery that could store enough charge and weighed less than the equivalent of fuel.

That is the beauty of this device its a reversible reaction so you don't need to transport the Hydrogen as long as you have enough storage you can reverse the reaction and turn the Hydrogen back into Electricity.

Its a brillant Idea.

and in a reversible reaction can convert this Hydrogen back into Electricity , this is all in one device.

As long as you have have enough storage for the Hydrogen gas you could store alot of energy in this Fuel cell.

And as I told you before, hydrogen is not and never will be an energy source. So go crawl back under the bridge you crawled from under.

"Can operate for 3 weeks".

ahhh but that's how long most Submarine's operate without resupply as its the time the Fresh food runs out only 4 Navy's operate Submarine's for 6 months underwater China ,Russia, USA and Britain and the reason they do that is because they have Nuclear missiles and they wish to hide. Now the article does not talk about Fuel but it wouldn't surprise me if its about 3 months and a near silent Submarine with just 25 crew just think of the possibilities.

If you have an old mining pit all that is

You then have storage many times that of the worlds largest grid battery's.

and what of it ? let me quote the previous lines

"German shipbuilders have recently offered larger, longer-range versions of the 212/214 submarines, the Type 216 and 218."

Unless you're speaking of "hydrogen fusion", hydrogen is not and never will be a source of energy. It is simply a means of storing energy generated by other means and the generation of that hydrogen involves the associated losses associated with any conversion of energy from one form to another.

I hate to break it to you but Submarines are not Commercial vessels therefore just like Nuclear Submarines the cost of the fuel is not the most important factor. Stealth is what you want as these Subs would be used for Spying , Intercepting communications , Transporting special forces etc the fact that these Subs are almost undetectable by modern Technologies must make the Navy's of the worlds mouth water.

Every time I see or hear of some idiot spewing "oh, we'll just use hydrogen as an energy source", I know that I have a reliable indicator that the person in question is simply parroting some other idiot and their statements may be safely ignored.

It is your close mindedness that is the issue here as you have missed a gem of an article which talks about future Submarines and man it looks interesting.

Go tell Japan where they are going to run those wires for this "supergrid".

Well I would think they would have to go through the sea of Japan or along the routes of Shinkansen lines
but I don't see this really being a major obstacle really one of finance.

Then there's Hawaii, South Korea, Israel, and so many other places in need of energy where they cannot rely on friendly neighbors to build a large electrical grid to spread out the load of inherently unreliable wind and solar power.

Hawaii will not have a problem they are already heading to renewables, South Korea not sure to be honest
and Israel having visited there many years ago has Sunshine in abundance, it will be and I am not kidding a Solar Superpower the only issue for Israel will be how to store all the power.

Then comes the matter of material and labor needs of these energy sources. One way to measure this is with EROEI, energy returned on energy invested. Offshore wind and solar power in it's various forms cannot support an economy that has become accustomed to the high EROEI that we've relied upon from things like onshore wind, hydro, nuclear, and fossil fuels.

ummm The problem with renewables is not one of not enough power , the return on investment is incredible as its cheap and it creates more power than we can handle,
the question is how to store the energy created for later use?

The US Navy would not ever consider building another aircraft carrier or submarine that did not have a nuclear power plant on board to make it move. The Navy retired the last of their smaller nuclear powered ships in the 1990s mostly out of politics than economics. If nuclear power works to power the floating cities we call an aircraft carrier than why not use them to power the cities we have on land?

In a nutshell ? Cost pure and simple the US Navy spends alot of money on upkeep for those Nuclear reactors. Renewables are just so much cheaper.
