Submission + - UK about to sign a law to prohibit downloads of co (eztv.it)

sam0vi writes: Glazing through eztv's website i came across this piece which summarizes the guardian's article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/apr/08/digital-economy-bill-passes-third-reading). The thing that scared me the most is this amendment to clause 8. From the article:
The new clause allows the secretary of state for business to order the blocking of "a location on the internet which the court is satisfied has been, is being or is likely to be used for or in connection with an activity that infringes copyright".
For me this is one big reason not to move into the UK (i will add it to the long running list)

Submission + - Scroogle has been blocked (scroogle.org)

An anonymous reader writes: Scroogle, the secure 3rd-party Google search interface, has been blocked by Google. Scroogle was an SSL-based search proxy that enabled one to search for and receive Google results over an SSL connection in a pseudo-anonymous manner.

Submission + - Adding DRM to Blu-ray Ripping is a Buzz Kill 1

High Tech Home writes: Even before Real Networks lost its RealDVD ripping case, the studios were suing Kaleidescape, the grandaddy of all movie server manufacturers. Now the company has added Blu-ray ripping to its repertoire but safely. In its effort to appease the digital gods, the company's new DRM scheme will disappoint users: Go ahead and copy that Blu-ray to the media server, but the physical disc must be present in the tray in order to play it. What’s the point?

Submission + - How Valuable is an Graduate Degree Earned Online? 4

radicalskeptic writes: "In 2008 I graduated with a bachelor's degree, and two months later I boarded a plane to China and began a career teaching English. For several reasons, I would like to expand my education and earn a master's degree. However, my Mandarin isn't good enough to attend the local universities, and while I'm planning to return to the U.S. eventually, I would like to remain in China for another couple of years. Another option is online education. While in theory something I learn at my laptop should be just as useful and applicable as knowledge gained in a brick-and-mortar building, some obvious questions remain: do employers consider online degrees as valuable as ones received at traditional schools? If not, why not? Will I learn as much? Are there any other pitfalls someone considering distance education should be aware of? What were your experiences with online education like?"

Submission + - Oil leak could be stopped with a nuke (trueslant.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Oil leak in the Gulf of Mexican could be stopped with an underground nuclear blast, a Russian newspaper reports:

Komsomoloskaya Pravda, the best-selling Russian daily, reports that in Soviet times such leaks were plugged with controlled nuclear blasts underground. The idea is simple, KP writes: "the underground explosion moves the rock, presses on it, and, in essence, squeezes the well's channel." Yes! It’s so simple, in fact, that the Soviet Union, a major oil exporter, used this method five times to deal with petrocalamities. ...

These kinds of surgical strikes to shut off underground leaks, however, were carried out only five times, with the last one occuring in 1979. And there was only one misfire, near Kharkov, Ukraine, where a nuclear blast was unable to stanch a gas leak.

Happily, with a track record like that, "the chances of failure in the Gulf of Mexico are 20%", KP writes. "The Americans could certainly risk it."

Submission + - Dawkins to arrest Pope Benedict (ozjokes.com) 3

xavieramont writes: From TimesOnline UK: "RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain “for crimes against humanity”. Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author, have asked human rights lawyers to produce a case for charging Pope Benedict XVI over his alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church. The pair believe they can exploit the same legal principle used to arrest Augusto Pinochet, the late Chilean dictator, when he visited Britain in 1998." If this doesn't kickstart the Apocalypse, I don't know what will.

Comment Try to find the right shop (Score 1) 441

I was released from the army with 3 years of development and team leadership under my belt, but it was still not enough for most of the big companies since it isn't exactly experience in the industry.

By chance I managed to find a small (and now very successful) startup which were actually looking for a developer with a clean slate that doesn't have necessarily much knowledge, but has potential to be a good developer; so that they could help him and build him up the proper way.

Guess who nailed the position and is now super happy in his modest, yet uber-satisfying job :D
