When I went to http://www.facebook.com/common/browser.php (the source link) Facebook told me Chrome isn't supported and I should use Safari (or IE or Firefox). At best, I'm calling this a lame publicity stunt, but given the date I'm inclined to call BS. (And, no, I didn't bother actually trying to register and then log into FB, so blame me for not RTFA if it can be called an article.)

I'm pretty sure it's an April Fool's gag. My rationale is this:
+ I resolve www.gpf-comics.com to 208.75.87.203
+ A traceroute shows 208.75.87.203 to be sitting behind a datotel.com router
+ Datotel LLC is a colo hosting company and has been hosting gpf-comics.com at 208.75.87.203 for at least the last year
+ Visiting the site by IP alone brings up the same ICE domain seizure page, but the image breaks because the webserver auto-corrects the request to resolve to http://www.208.75.87.203/ICE_Seizure.jpg
+ I don't know that this is specifically known server behaviour for GPF Comics' host, but it suggests that the ICE seizure page is hosted on the actual Datotel rack, and ICE seizes DNS records, not servers.

As for why, I dunno.

It just occurred to me: What if this is just a dumb April Fool's prank? I resolve www.gpf-comics.com as 208.75.87.203, which is sitting behind a datotel.com router -- Datotel LLC is a colo hosting company (it seems), and this seems to be historically where it's hosted. Curiously, if you pull the IP address up directly, you get the same "domain seized" page, but at least for me, the image is broken because it can't resolve www.208.75.87.203/ICE_Seizure.jpg (god knows why it's trying to insert www in front, because I specifically requested http://208.75.87.203/ICE_Seizure.jpg ) so... this is kind of weird.

You're not the only one who submitted this to the firehose, as well. If I could make one suggestion to you, it's to check the firehose before submitting a story to check if it's a dupe. I can understand that you might've skipped that step if you were so tired as to write 'parity' instead of 'parody' three times, but it's something to consider, because everyone loves flaming dupes if they get past the editors onto the front page. Now, that's the editor's fault, of course, but still, that dupe had to have been submitted by someone who wasn't checking the hose.

Don't worry, I'm not deriding you, just giving a bit of advice.

Submission + - LHC, CERN has found the hugs boson (web.cern.ch) 2

An anonymous reader writes: In a ground-breaking announcement issued today, CERN, the European Organization of Nuclear Research (which hosts the enormous and magnificent Large Hardon Collider) has announced the discovery of the hugs boson, an unexpected gauge boson, which was not predicted by the Standard Model. Noteworthy, the discovery was made by a high-school student during his scolarship. Due to his age, it is not clear whether he can be awarded the Nobel Prize. However, his teacher has generously agreed to be awarded in his name, in case of any problems.

Aren't there five IR emitters on each side of the stock Nintendo sensor bar? I once pointed my webcam at it while my Wii was running because I was goofing off like a tool, and I saw five bright LED-like lights on each side in the webcam feed (since the CCD can pick up near IR). The Wiimote calibrates itself on the two rows, and I'm pretty sure that it simplifies the emitters into two single dots in the calibration settings for easy visualization. Any source of IR emissions can be used, and if you're gaming from further back, just spread them wider (admittedly something you can't do to the sensor bar without damaging it) and calibrate for that. You can even use candles.

I don't actually know if the Wiimote does this, since the accelerometer (and the Wii Motion Plus dongle) would do a much better job, but the Wiimote could get approximate angle information from the two rows, but it'd only be able to gauge up to 180 degrees of rotation unless the two ends of the bar somehow differentiate themselves. I doubt Nintendo does this since it's got an accelerometer instead. Just babbling, now.

"Parody," you mean. Parity is not a defense under copyright law. I'd rather wait to hear more details rather than speculating that it was specifically a Harry Potter parody (which would be protected speech) that caused ICE to seize the domain. For all we know, it's a retarded unrelated thing or the site was hosting strange stuff on the down-low. Or, heavens forfend since this NEVER happens, it could be a mistake, since this shit is pretty much as automated as YouTube DMCA takedowns.
