Comment Re:Just Canceled (Score 1) 85

I'm honestly trying to think of the last new movie that I bought was. Maybe the last Star Wars movie just so I could have the entire set or possibly even the last Hobbit movie? I've picked up some older ones here and there, but I don't think I've seen a movie in the last 5+ years that I wanted to see more than once.

Comment Just Canceled (Score 2) 85

I finally canceled my Netflix DVD (2 disc plan) this month. I was using it mainly to watch older movies that were currently unavailable elsewhere or to watch the one or two recent movies that actually looked decent. But after going through most of their back catalog I found that I just didn't watch enough movies to make it worthwhile anymore. I figured it would be cheaper to just buy a new movie two or three times a year (if that) or use RedBox. While they had an impressive amount of old content, recently I was finding that many of the movies I wanted had an unknown wait on them or were currently unavailable. At this point I think I've pretty much bought any movie I'm going to watch more than once and I'm not really into most modern movies so renting DVDs no longer made sense.

It's a shame that their streaming service has almost nothing of interest on it, although it's worth it just to see The Other Side of the Wind and the accompanying documentary if you're an Orson Welles fan.

Comment Need to Simplify the Process (Score 1) 207

I think most people want to recycle their plastic, but they want a simple way to do it. I know our recycling company only takes certain plastics and even then there are exceptions. It gets confusing, and when people get confused they get frustrated and they give up. People just want to throw all their plastics in a bin for recycling, they don't want to remember "1, 3, and 5 are ok, but not 2 and 4 except if the 4 is a yogurt container or the 2 is a plastic bag...". Not sure if we can ever simplify it enough for all people to want to put in the effort, but at the moment it's a total mess even for those of us who are trying. When you have to consult a chart before recycling anything you know the system is broken.

Comment It Stays In My Boot Menu (Score 1) 60

I still have Memtest86+ in my boot menu. Not because I've ever really needed to use it (although I think I have once or twice), but because if I remove it from Grub my system won't boot into either Manjaro or Windows anymore (I dual boot). I have no idea why, but the issue goes away if I leave Memtest alone so it stays. I wonder if this update will fix the issue?

That's what I'm using in my PC. I built it myself 14 or so years ago and it still does what I want so I see no reason to upgrade. I use Manjaro so it's pretty snappy, but I do dual boot into Win 10 when I need to (Wine just doesn't cut it sometimes). I have seen no compelling reason to buy a new PC to get Windows 11.

Comment People Will Cheat at Anything (Score 2) 105

I've always been amazed at the dumbest things people will cheat at. I understand when there's money or fame involved (I don't agree with it, but at least it makes sense), but I've seen people cheat at games where there was absolutely nothing at stake (or at least nothing of value). I think some people have to win at any cost or they think that the world will look down on them somehow.

At my office I can remember during a training session there was a game to see if everyone understood the lesson, so people were divided into to teams and some questions were asked. There was no prize or fame involved, it was literally a learning tool and nothing more. At least two of the four teams were caught trying to look up the answers on their phones when they thought no one was looking and were called out by the instructor (to his credit, the instructor did try to keep the admonishment lighthearted). But still, people were cheating during what amounted to a company mandated class that no one really wanted to be at for absolutely no gain. I still can't believe that those people were my co-workers.

I'm honestly not sure what metric I'd use to finally declare the pandemic over, but I do know that I haven't seen it yet. It's slowed down a great deal, but we're far from out of the woods IMHO.
