Submission + - Battlefield: Reading from Paper vs from Monitor

Bamafan77 writes: There's an interesting hidden battle taking place over this issue. Many (most?) people view printing paper as "wasteful" and something to be avoided at all costs. But the fact is that consuming information from a monitor (even a nice LCD) is NOT as good as consuming information from paper. I use computers for things like storing information, doing calculations, and quick lookup of information. If I need to read something that takes more than a couple minutes, it gets printed. This includes articles, code, long emails, etc.

So I'd like to get the SlashThought on this — do you prefer reading from a screen or do you prefer printing things out before reading?

Submission + - Who Speaks for Early-Career Scientists?

Vicissidude writes: Does America need more scientists and technical workers from abroad? The idea of a scientist shortage is "almost universally accepted [in political circles], and there's almost no one in Washington and no one on the Hill who says that there's a glut of scientists," says Ron Hira, a policy expert at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and a research associate at the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, DC. Despite these perceptions, tens of thousands of PhDs, many of them American-born and American-educated, are stuck in dead-end positions, struggling to find careers commensurate with their training and experience. Many others with technical expertise watch companies use H-1B visas to move their jobs offshore. Far from signaling a shortage of trained scientific talent, current conditions suggest that what this country fails to produce is suitable career opportunities for thousands who have extensive scientific and technical training. Regardless of the citizenship of these scientists, the arrival of additional people with comparable qualifications has been shown to depress income and increase competition. Still, "the only two organizations that I know about that have been actively involved in the debate on immigration" on the side of workers represent electrical engineers and computer programmers. "I don't see any scientists involved in this at all. ... What is confusing to me is who's representing their interests. Nobody, as far as I can tell."

Journal Journal: NFL Predictions (Via Dice - of course;-) 2

Well, just in the nick of time, I have my predictions for the playoffs. As I did last season, I used dice to predict the results, but used a more complicated method. How well it worked... well, it gave an answer, so that's good enough for now;-)

Submission + - Vista Exploit Surfaces on Russian Hacker Site

nithinraju writes: "Proof-of-concept exploit code for a privilege escalation vulnerability affecting all versions of Windowsincluding Vistahas been posted on a Russian hacker forum, forcing Microsoft to activate its emergency response process. Mike Reavey, operations manager of the Microsoft Security Response Center, confirmed that the company is closely monitoring the public posting, which first appeared on a Russian language forum on Dec. 15. It affects csrss.exe, which is the main executable for the Microsoft Client/Server Runtime Server. According to an alert cross-posted to security mailing lists, the vulnerability is caused by a memory corruption when certain strings are sent through the MessageBox API. The PoC reportedly allows for local elevation of privilege on Windows 2000 SP4, Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP SP1, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista operating systems, Reavey said in an entry posted late Dec. 21 on the MSRC blog. Initial indications are that in order for the attack to be successful, the attacker must already have authenticated access to the target system. Of course these are preliminary findings and we have activated our emergency response process involving a multitude of folks who are investigating the issue in depth to determine the full scope and potential impact to Microsofts customers, Reavey added. While I know this is a vulnerability that impacts Windows Vista I still have every confidence that Windows Vista is our most secure platform to date, he added. The MSRC is expected to issue a formal security advisory with pre-patch workarounds. In the interim, the company is urging customers to enable a firewall, apply all security updates and install anti-virus and anti-spyware protection. To date, there are no reports of actual attacks against Windows users. The Microsoft confirmation comes hard on the heels of a claim by anti-virus vendor Trend Micro that underground hackers are selling zero-day exploits for Windows Vista at $50,000 a pop. Submission + - Should I continue my education?

Jerim writes: I just finished my AS in Computer Science and am rolling it over into a BS in Computer Science. The problem is that I am 28 years old. I didn't really decide until I was 26 years old that I wanted to make IT my career. I have been moderately learning new technologies here and there over the years. However, at pretty much every level of the industry, I run into people who seem to know everything. Now, I like to think that they are just bluffing, or it is all in my head. No one can know everything. Lately, though, I have begun to think "What if they do?" What if that weird guy down the hall really does know everything there is to know about MySQL, PHP, Oracle, Java, and a dozen technologies I am only familiar with.

I feel that I can continue on in my studies and get a BS degree, but I am concerned that no matter how much I love the topic and no matter how hard I work at it, I will always be too far behind people to ever catch up. That I will have a BS degree and still be doing all the entry level stuff, with some "know it all" always looking over my shoulder to make sure I don't screw up. Is there any room in the industry for someone who doesn't know everything or has tons of experience, other than entry level positions? Since I won't get my BS degree until after my 31st birthday, is it worth it? Or is that just too late to be of any use in the industry?

Submission + - Microsoft MVP: Vista Sucks!

WED Fan writes: "You know things are bad for an OS when a Microsoft MVP proclaims to the world that Vista sucks. Mirroring my own experiences, this MVP can't get his development environment working, his old apps have stopped working, and the common way of upgrading, over XP, fails horribly.

Disclaimer: You can check my previous comments, I basically love MS, but Vista is BAAAD."
