Comment Re:Median salary 300k?! (Score 3, Insightful) 135

Who are you to dictate what someone "should" be paid?

If you earned $300k would you be arguing that you should be paid less? Or are you the exception because your work is work that money? Half of Google is being paid $300k because it was decided that their job is worth it.

It is comical, if not downright evil that someone who is earning $500 million per year is demanding people be paid *less* or not at all.

This idea that if someone is earning more that *I* am, they clearly are overpaid or don't deserve it is there so we regulate ourselves and don't see that these gold hoarding dragons are siphoning off money that we should be rightfully be earning.

I have to say that sounds like a pretty accurate definition. I was expecting something more pejorative.

Gold as a material has many useful physical properties that make it valuable above "being pretty". Gold conducts heat and electricity better than copper, and resists corrosion from everyday conditions. It is far more malleable than copper, so it wouldn't be used in applications that require durability, but as a material it has many potential applications.

If it wasn't for its rarity and expense, it probably would displace copper in many electronic applications.

Once the layoff process has started, no, but if it hasn't started yet then that is exactly what they are trying todo.

There is absolutely 0% chance that exactly 15% of employees are screwing the pooch which just so happens to be equal to the 15% employee reduction Meta needs to balance their reduced revenue.

This matters in terms of the law because whether you are fired for some actual employee misconduct or simply laid off can not only impact any severance that might otherwise be applicable, but can also affect your eligibility to receive employment insurance benefits.
Employers that dishonestly try to claim that people are being fired (even on account of underperformance) when they should be saying on the paperwork that they were laid off could be reprimanded, or even fined if it is not an isolated occurrence.

You're right, but any enforcement of the law would be in the hands of the state and that could take a long time to settle, all the while the "fired" employees are left hanging out to dry.

Yes, the employees could sue but an individual suing Meta is financial suicide while a class-action lawsuit means handing over 50% of your severance to the lawyers.

Cutting 15% of your workforce is one thing, but if they just did a regular layoff they would be on the hook for severance. By manufacturing a reason to fire them, they won't be on the hook to pay them anything.

Tuning layoffs into firings just to avoid paying severance is another level of evil entirely.

Yes.

I looked into installing Swiftkey on my wife's iPhone based on my longtime use of Swiftkey on Android.

Based on my research, the iOS version is nothing like the Android version. The iOS version is more of a keyboard skin than a different keyboard software.

In the end the work to migrate her phone to a new keyboard seemed to be a waste of time and I left her phone as it was.
