Submission + - Mouse Buttons

Lefty/Righty writes: "I first started using a mouse in 1987 or so — on an old mac I forget the model of. Its mouse had but one button. I next bought a 386SX and purchased a Microsoft wheel mouse with — surprise! — two buttons. Not knowing how to arrange it, it felt more comfortable to use the RIGHT button as the primary click-selection button — even though I am right-handed. I still use this arrangement, and my hand/wrist never gets sore or tired. In almost twenty years, I have never met anyone else who uses the mouse this way. Do any readers of slashdot use this arrangement?"

Submission + - Elephants pass mirror test of self-awareness

6350' writes: "Researchers have published findings that elephants are now known to be in the rather exclusive club of species that can recognize themselves in mirrors, National Geographic News reports. Interestingly, some elephants in the test, which was conducted at the Bronx Zoo in New York, recognized and touched marks placed on their head while looking in the mirror. Others were seen to open their mouth and peer into the reflection, indicating an awareness that the reflection they percieved was their own. 'There seems to be some correlation between an ability to recognize oneself in a mirror and higher forms of social complexity,' one of the authors of the study notes."

Submission + - One Final Wii Secret

Nin10dude writes: "From Warp Whistle

"Bhudler (GamePro User) — I recently went into a GameStop store to see if they had a Wii Kiosk and pick up the new Splinter Cell. While I was in there, I began to discuss the Wii system with the manager of the store. He explained Nintendo recently held a GameStop Managers kind of meet and greet for the Wii, with Reggie present. He also said Reggie announced their is still one more big secret left on the Wii, which will be revealed around launch. I called another store and the manager there said Reggie did in fact say such a thing. My question is have you heard any of this? Do you have any speculation as to what it may be? I have heard it is potentially a graphics solution or a camera attachment. RiceBurner (GamePro Staff Member) — Wow, you're up on your stuff. I can confirm that there was a GameStop retreat and Reggie did in fact say there will be another big Wii revelation around launch time.""

They're geared initially for high-performance computing markets, where th

Submission + - Fewer Calories Mean Healthier Monkeys

lylet writes: "So this NYT article in Tuesday's Paper "One for the Ages: A Prescription That May Extend Life" explains some research about calorie intake as it relates to aging. I like the graphic with the serving sizes, but think that if the 3,000 calorie guy cut out the bacon, butter, half of the fries, and the skeezy looking cafeteria dinner, he might just be ok. What is a good (and do-able) 1800 or 2000 calorie day for a male? Toast, fruit, salad with chicken, fruit, and then a normal, but small dinner perhaps. And why are the monkeys scowling? I'll bet it's because they have to eat those little pellets, and one of them is hungry."

Submission + - becoming a software developer affordably

An anonymous reader writes: How is it possible to break into the programmer field to become a software developer? Most job ads I see, even for junior positions, are asking for 2-4 years experience in each technology listed (and list a giant laundry list). Generally HR drones filter me completely out of the running. I interviewed with one place and was offered the job, but they clearly stated they wanted to underpay me and I was expected to work a lot of overtime. The good places to work just don't seem interested in interviewing me. My work experience is mostly with databases, so DBA jobs are pretty easy, however it is my dream to become a superb software developer and in order to accomplish this goal I need to practice the craft all day at work. I have a college degree in computer science with a 4.0 GPA however that doesn't seem to help me be any closer to becoming a software developer. It is looking like a big waste of time where I should have been developing instead of going to college.

Is there a way to find such a job without having to go down to making 30,000 per year? Currently I make 70,000 per year and I do need the money as I have a family to support. I figure I can go down to 65,000 (in the New York/Northern NJ area). What I really want is a good job to break me into the field of programming (any object oriented language at this point .NET, Java, C++, etc.) so that I can get object oriented development/design experience. People can suggest open source projects, but ultimately a little programming in your spare time is no substitute for doing it full time and working on a really large system. In order to become really good it is necessary to practice 40+ hours per week.

Submission + - How do I get back the old discussion system?

DoctorTwo writes: "When I clicked into the discussion section for the item on Universal Pictures aversion therapy session on fans of Firefly and Serenity, I got flipped into something weird. A different 'verse, perhaps. All I can see are three posts. While they are very informative, and would all have rated 5 under the old system, the discussion header lists 292 posts, with no information on 1) how to get back to the old system, or 2) how to reach all 292 posts one by one 3) how to flip Firefly/Serenity into this 'verse, the one without Universal Pictures, and have it keep going on forever."
