Comment Re:You can help. (Score 1) 232

unless the proxy you setup is inside the iranian infrastructure (ie, on the iran side of the choke-point), it's going to be relatively worthless, since the chokepoint will show the traffic from iran going to your proxy. realistically you've got few options:
- install on the inside, so when the chokepoint logs say "it's $PROXY_IP doing it", your lack of logs protects those that connected to your proxy
- route around the chokepoint, for which you'll need access to infrastructure that will be difficult to secure (assuming iran's network security dudes aren't total fucking morons).
- links that do not rely on iranian infrastructure (an encrypted link to a satellite for e.g.)

A squid or tor proxy on the outside's going to exactly nothing to protect anyone in Iran -- their packets still have to leave the country to get to your proxy!

Walter Wart writes: "AT&T removed the lyrics ""George Bush, leave this world alone." and "George Bush find yourself another home." from Pearl Jam's Lollapalooza broadcast. AT&T claims that its content monitor had done so "by mistake". This has serious implications for political expression in an increasingly corporatized Internet. Pearl Jam said that it highlights the need for Net neutrality."

Submission + - Microsoft Nurtures Silverlight on Linux

An anonymous reader writes: When Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie unveiled Silverlight at MIX07, he vowed that it would be a cross-platform technology. It appears as if the software giant is making good on that pledge: Some of Microsoft's top developers, including Scott Guthrie, have provided technical guidance for a Linux implementation of Silverlight. Microsoft contributed technical guidance to the Mono to build the "Moonlight" Linux implementation of Silverlight. Mono is contributing its recommendations for the platform ahead of a refresh of Silverlight 1.1 in September. Miguel de Icaza, vice president of develop platforms for Novell and leader of the Mono project, said that Microsoft offered up its opinion and guidance on how to build Moonlight, and that its recommendations inspired Mono's work. Microsoft is also soliciting contributions to the Silverlight platform from the open-source community, according to de Icaza

Submission + - Weak link in Spam business

stuckinarut writes: A study of more than a million spam emails has revealed a weak link in the junk email business.Geoff Voelker and Chris Fleizach at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) examined the infrastructure behind spam. The pair studied more than a million spam messages, collected over a single week in 2006, which advertised 2334 distinct companies, ranging from businesses selling legal products to financial scamming sites.
The messages came from a wide range of sources ... but when the UCSD team followed web links in each spam message, they found that 94% directed traffic to a single web server. Furthermore, 57% led to a single host based in the US.

Submission + - How long do you wait for replies to e-mail?

tinkertim writes: "What I am asking has been asked many times before. I've noticed that people (in general, through my own dealings) seem to be growing increasingly impatient (seems more so over the last year). I'd like to ask slashdot readers, simply, how long does it take before you feel that someone 'blew you off' by not replying to your e-mail and how upset do you get when this appears to happen?"

Submission + - Pope Acknowledges Evolution 1

teslatug writes: In a discussion with 400 priests Pope Benedict has admitted the merits of evolution saying "This clash [between creationism and evolution] is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favour of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such." How will this pronouncement affect the argument of the creationists who are against the teaching of evolution?
