Submission + - Uber Faces Engineers' Lawsuit Alleging Gender, Race Bias (bloomberg.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Uber was sued by three Latina engineers who claim the company pays women and people of color less than their peers and doesn’t promote them as frequently as males, whites and Asians. The three women from the ride-hailing company, one of whom still works there, accused Uber of violating California’s Equal Pay Act in a complaint filed Tuesday in San Francisco state court on behalf of all engineers similarly held back. The women filed the complaint under a state statute that gives employees the right to step into the shoes of the state labor secretary to bring enforcement actions. That law also may give them a way around a provision in Uber’s contracts requiring workplace disputes to go through one-on-one arbitration instead of as group actions in court. “Female employees and employees of color are systematically undervalued compared to their male and white or Asian American peers because female employees and employees of color receive, on average, lower rankings despite equal or better performance,” according to the complaint against Uber. In July, Uber said that it adjusted salaries to ensure equity in pay for women and minorities.

Vitamin B3 Supplement Can Prevent Miscarriages and Birth Defects, Says Study (news.com.au) 39

brindafella writes: The landmark finding about vitamin B3, made by the Victor Chang Institute in Sydney, Australia, has been described as "the most important discovery for pregnant women since folate." The study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. From News.com.au: "The historic discovery, believed to be among Australia's greatest ever medical achievements, is expected to forever change the way pregnant women are cared for around the globe. Every year 7.9 million babies are born with a birth defect worldwide and one in four pregnant women suffer a miscarriage in Australia. In the vast majority of cases the cause of these problems has remained a mystery. Until now. Professor Sally Dunwoodie from the Victor Chang Institute has identified a major cause of miscarriages as well as heart, spinal, kidney and cleft palate problems in newborn babies. The landmark study found that a deficiency in a vital molecule, known as NAD, prevents a baby's organs from developing correctly in the womb. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is one of the most important molecules in all living cells. NAD synthesis is essential for energy production, DNA repair and cell communication. Disrupting its production causes a NAD deficiency. The Victor Chang researchers have found this deficiency is particularly harmful during a pregnancy as it cripples an embryo when it is forming. At the heart of the paramount discovery is the dietary supplement vitamin B3, also known as niacin. Scientists at the Victor Chang Institute have discovered how to prevent miscarriages and birth defects by simply boosting levels of the nutrient during pregnancy."

I may recommend the PlayStation VR as it is powered by a "new generation console," being the PlayStation 4. While I haven't tested the Rift or Vive (just read many good things about each headset, especially the Vive), I did enjoy my time with the PS VR. It didn't cause any motion sickness for me and was very easy to set up and use -- you basically just launch the app from the PS4. Also, the trials I played of various games in the demo disc were fun while they lasted.

What ultimately caused me to return the unit (along with the PS4) was the price. It costs $400 with no full games, and that doesn't include the price of the PS4. I also am learning that I am not as much of a gamer as I once was. With that said, it may be worth it for you since you're looking for a good VR headset and/or a new gaming console. Fasting Diet 'Regenerates Diabetic Pancreas' (bbc.com) 166

According to a new study published in the journal Cell, a certain type of fasting diet can trigger the pancreas to regenerate itself. Of course, the researchers advise people not to try this without medical advice. BBC reports: In the experiments, mice were put on a modified form of the "fasting-mimicking diet." It is like the human form of the diet when people spend five days on a low calorie, low protein, low carbohydrate but high unsaturated-fat diet. It resembles a vegan diet with nuts and soups, but with around 800 to 1,100 calories a day. Then they have 25 days eating what they want -- so overall it mimics periods of feast and famine. Previous research has suggested it can slow the pace of aging. But animal experiments showed the diet regenerated a special type of cell in the pancreas called a beta cell. These are the cells that detect sugar in the blood and release the hormone insulin if it gets too high. There were benefits in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the mouse experiments. Type 1 is caused by the immune system destroying beta cells and type 2 is largely caused by lifestyle and the body no longer responding to insulin. Further tests on tissue samples from people with type 1 diabetes produced similar effects.

Fun fact: In the original draft, I noted that the Galaxy Note 7 came out in late August, well after the plane was reported missing. But I removed it due to the fact that the report clearly specifies that the pilot brought Apple products onboard. Still, we can expect a fair share of Samsung jokes regardless...
