EBay's Bid To Go Beyond Auctions Disappoints 83

Carl Bialik from WSJ writes "eBay is having trouble attracting online shoppers with its new fixed-price sales site, the Wall Street Journal reports. From the article: 'Jonathan Garriss, executive director of the Professional eBay Sellers Alliance, an independent group of eBay sellers, estimates eBay Express accounts for less than 1% of sales for the group's more than 1,000 members, who together sell more than $1 billion a year in merchandise. And while eBay's main auction site attracted more consumer visits than any other online retailer in November, eBay Express was at No. 87 on the list of top shopping and classified sites, according to research firm Hitwise Pty. Ltd.'"

Iddo Genuth writes "A new extension to USB that will enable sharing of various USB peripherals between computers will be available early in 2007. The new MultiSwitch hub technology, developed by SMSC, allows the sharing of information and content from devices such as DVD players, cameras, printers, and scanners, and between laptops and desktops using a simple USB cable. Future hubs may also allow wireless sharing of peripherals."

Submission + - EasyBCD & TweakVI Partner-Up!

Michael Briggs writes: NeoSmart Technologies and Totalidea Software, makers of the highly-popular EasyBCD and TweakVI (respectively) Vista tweaking line of products have partnered up just in time for the holiday seasons.
TweakVI and EasyBCD have come together to offer our users the very best and complete control over practically every aspect of your Vista. It's your PC, you control it the way you want! Together EasyBCD and TweakVI allow users to completely setup and customize their Vista setups, from the bootmenu to the startup screen to the shutdown window: Complete Control! If you haven't had the chance to experience either, now is the time!
This makes EasyBCD and TweakVI the first vertically-integrated Vista tweaking solution. Best of all, both pieces of software or free and actively developed. It'll be hard for new-comers to fit into this market when it's already dominated before Vista even goes public!

Submission + - Why Einstein makes us fail

MrMagoo writes: Scientists have discovered that looking at photographs of Einstein will cause students to perform worse in tests because he is "subconciously intimidating" them. Also, looking at photos of successful sportsmen will make you perform worse in sports. Researchers found that "when volunteers were shown a photograph of England international footballer Wayne Rooney in action, their hand response was unaffected, but their foot response was slowed by 20 milliseconds." and that "the type of physical impairment suffered by the volunteers related directly to the assumed skills of the sportsmen they were observing. Just as a photograph of Einstein causes lapses in the mind, a photograph of an expert footballer causes lapses in the legs." The article suggests we ditch photographs of our heros, or they may cause us to underperform.

The Google Phone? 85

VE3OGG writes "There has been ample hype over the last several years that Apple's iPhone was just around the corner. (Though a product named iPhone was just recently released by Cisco / Linksys.) Well, while Apple fans continue to salivate at the thought of a phone powered by the company-of-cool, the index-everything-while-doing-no-evil company may be setting itself up to produce their own Google phone in partnership with Orange."

Submission + - Swedish ISP Unblocks AllofMP3.com

An anonymous reader writes: There has been a flurry of activity surrounding the questionably legal AllofMP3.com music service. These questions have resulted in Euro-ISPs Tele2 and Perspektiv Bredband to block its customer's access from AllofMP3.com. ThePirateBay and its friends, The Bureau of Piracy fought back, blocking Perspektiv Bredband customers from accessing their BitTorrent tracker. The effort seems to have worked, as Perspektiv Bredband has rescinded its decision and has unblocked AllofMP3.com.

Why Palm Still Covets Palm OS 197

munchola wrote in with news that Palm has just announced a one-time payment for perpetual, royalty-free use of Palm OS. In 2005 Palm spun off PalmSource to an outside company, Access Systems Americas, and since that time has been paying out royalties for its use. At the same time Palm announced products based on Windows Mobile. Palm's latest announcement reduces the uncertainty among Palm OS developers. From the article: "In an unsurprising but symbolically important move, handheld and smartphone maker Palm this month signed a perpetual license with Access Systems Americas, which gives Palm the right to use Access' Palm OS operating system in whole or in part in any Palm device forever more. It sounds like a no-brainer, but the context is interesting, in particular what it means for the army of Palm OS developers out there. Believe it or not there are at least 160,000 Palm OS developers — and they're just the ones that Palm knows about."

Submission + - Stargate Movies Begin Filming April 15th

VE3OGG writes: "Well, even with the hit Sci-Fi show Stargate SG-1 coming to a close after a mind-boggling 10 seasons, the cast is ramping up for another major production: the first of two Stargate movies, the first of which is set to begin filming, according to IGN, on April 15th, 2007. According to Michael Shanks, the first will wrap up the Ori storyline, while the second will be a time-traveling adventure revolving around Ba'al. Who else is getting a sinking feeling?"
