tekgoblin writes: "Apple released an update to Java bringing the version on Mac to 1.6.0_31 for Mac’s running OS X. This patch actually closes multiple vulnerabilities that were found in the previous Java version being 1.6.0_29. The most serious exploit that it patched was the allowance of malicious code to be executed by visiting a compromised website."

Submission + - Approximately 1.5 Million Credit Cards Compromised in Hack (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "This isn’t exactly good news for people that own and use credit cards. A credit card processing company called Global Payments may have had a security breach. The security breach on their records affects users with VISA, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards potentially. This comes to an approximate total of up to 1.5 million customers affected."

Submission + - Xfinity 360 App Will Not Count Against Bandwidth Cap (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Comcast internet subscribers can rejoice. Comcast has recently announced that they will not be counting content streamed via their Comcast Xfinity App on the Xbox 360 against their bandwidth caps. Comcast claims that since the data is only traversing their internal Comcast network that it will not count towards your 250 GB limit a month."

Submission + - Disaster strikes Norwegian government web portal (icrontic.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Altinn.no is a web service run by the Norwegian government, on which citizens can find, fill out and deliver forms electronically. Every year Norwegian citizens can also log in to check their tax results.
This year as every year, the site was unable to cope with the traffic generated from everyone wanting to check their taxes at the same time. New this year however was that once people were finally able to log in, a significant amount of people were loggen in as someone else.
Users then had access to all financial data of this unfortunate person over two years back in time, in addition to the financial information of his wife and the company he worked for. Altinn shut down some 15 minutes later, and has been down since.

Microsoft

Submission + - Microsoft Bans Internal Purchases of Mac and iPad (tekgoblin.com) 1

tekgoblin writes: "A Microsoft internal email has surfaced which shows that Microsoft will not be allowing their Marketing and Sales groups to purchase the Apple iPad and Mac. SMSG short for Microsoft’s Sales, Marketing, Services, IT, & Operations Group may be putting a policy in place that will block employees from using internal funds to purchase Apple products.
The change makes sense to not allow internal Microsoft funds to be used on competitor products, but why the change now?"

Submission + - What Microsoft is doing wrong (tekgoblin.com) 1

tekgoblin writes: "Knowing how defensive people can get about their favorite companies and OSs, let me start by saying, this is an opinion piece. Using news and facts yes, but my conclusions are my own. If you don’t agree, think I’m misinterpreting, leave a comment.

Way back in August, I wrote an article discussing why Windows tablets have a chance. At the time, we’d seen images of the new Windows 8 operating system, and I predicted that Microsoft would offer transforming devices, which would use the new interface on tablets but move to full desktop Windows when plugged into a mouse and keyboard setup. I predicted that that extra capability to use full Windows would give Windows Tablets the ability to succeed where the iPad has failed, namely, enterprise."

Google

Submission + - Google is Planning to Penalize Overly Optimized Sites (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "This is an interesting move by Google but not completely off the rocker for them. Last year they blocked search results from the co.cc domain because they believed they polluted the search results.
Google plans to penalize overly optimized sites because they want to level the playing field for other websites who do not concentrate on such efforts. Basically there are sites out there that completely focus their efforts on SEO and not content and those results would rank higher than sites that don’t focus on SEO."

Submission + - iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1 Shows 4G Indicator on AT&T (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "If you are a user that has an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1 on AT&T you may have noticed your 3G symbol turned 4G. It looks like users on AT&T that are connected to the HSPA+ network are getting the 4G symbol even though it is not a true 4th generation network. Apple and AT&T made this decision because they think that the iPhone 4S is capable of 4G speeds even though it is not true 4G."

Submission + - iPad 3 Design Revealed (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "MIC Gadget has gotten a hold of the outer shell of the iPad 3, or so they say. The new iPad 3 looks very familiar and if I didn’t know better I would say that I was looking at the iPad 2.
There had been rumors that the iPad 3 might not have a home button on the front but utilize the gestures in iOS 5 only. Well, it seemed unlikely and it appears to be debunked."

Submission + - 46% of Adults Now Own a Smartphone (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "This isn't very surprising that Pew Research Center is reporting that 46% of adults now own a smartphone. The statistic would have been more surprising just a few years ago.

With the Apple and Android wars, smartphone saturation has increased drastically over the past few years. From May 2011 till February 2012 there was a 11% increase in smartphone purchases in the US by Adults. The data that the Pew Research Center collected came from adults that could say yes to the following two questions.

45% of cell owners say that their phone is a smartphone, up from 33% in May 2011
49% of cell owners say that their phone operates on a smartphone platform"

Submission + - Apple iPad 3 Event Confirmed March 7th (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Looks like Apple will be announcing the new Apple iPad 3 on March 7th in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. The iPad 3 has been rumored to include the upgraded camera which we all felt should have launched in the iPad 2. Apple has not revealed any information about the iPad 3 except for the announcement."

Submission + - Comcast Xfinity Streampix to Compete with Netflix (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "Comcast has announced that it will launch its own streaming service that will compete with Netflix directly. The service will be called Xfinity Streampix. Comcast will bundle the service with its existing cable offerings and will have a price point set at $4.99 a month which is lower than Netflix’s current $7.99 a month offering.

We have known for some time that Comcast was making something to compete with Netflix and Hulu’s streaming services. Streampix will provide shows such as “30 Rock,” and “Lost” and movies like “Ocean’s Eleven”. The offering will be very similar to Netflix’s current offering of previously aired TV shows."

Submission + - Apple Settles Antennagate Lawsuit (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "A lawsuit was filed against Apple in July of 2010 against the signal degradation better known as “Antennagate” on the iPhone 4. The settlement in the lawsuit has received preliminary approval. The case sought damages for owners of the original iPhone 4 which said that ”the case and antenna design has led to a substantial degradation in signal quality and dropped calls when the phone is used in a normal and foreseeable fashion by users.”"

Submission + - Online Passes Are Absurd (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: "I’ve encountered the strangest phenomenon in recent years that I find difficult to explain. Gamers around the world have been suckered into either awkwardly plugging in codes or paying additional fees for each game. A publisher’s decision has cost them both time and money while offering nothing in return, and oddly enough the consumers defend and even encourage the practice. Second hand buyers deserve what they get! That’ll show them for having the nerve to show interest in your project over someone else’s!"
