Submission + - Firefox 3 Plans and IE8 Speculation

ReadWriteWeb writes: "Information about the next versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer suggest that the two biggest browsers are heading in different directions. Mozilla has published a wiki page detailing its plans for the next version of Firefox, codenamed "Gran Paradiso". Among the mandatory requirements listed for FF3 are improving the add-on experience, providing an extensible bookmarks back-end platform, adding more support for web services "to act as content handlers" — all of which show that Firefox wants to be an independent information broker rather than a simple HTML renderer in its next version. Also in the works is Microsoft's IE8. According to ActiveWin.com, a Microsoft official at CES told them that work has already begun for IE 8 and it may be released as a final product "within 18-24 months". Looking ahead, it's obvious that IE will continue to hook into the advanced functionality that Vista offers.

So while IE7 and Firefox 2 were more alike than different (feature-wise they're practically identical!), with IE8 and FF3 we will likely see the two biggest browsers head off into different directions."

Giving the Gift of Ubuntu Linux for Christmas? 235

Father Christmas asks: "This Christmas I have decided to give all of my friends and relatives Ubuntu Linux CDs from the Ubuntu ShipIt service. In addition, I plan to help them backup their old systems, install Ubuntu, and then introduce them to using Linux for their everyday tasks. What sort of post-installation changes should be made to Ubuntu to make it easy for everyday people to use? What extra software packages should be installed? Should I stick with the default Gnome installation, or would KDE be a better choice? Is there anything else that should be done to maximize the utility of their systems, as well as make their first experience with Linux a great one?"

Journal Journal: Linux Network Install (No Monitor Blues...) 2

Hopefully someone out there can help me.

I have an extra box sitting next to me. Pretty decent specs, 2.1 GHz, 512 megs of ram. I'd like to put linux on it (preferrably fedora, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter) and use it as a server. The problem... No monitor (or keyboard for that matter). I think currently it has Mandrake installed on it, but just the default install. Would it be possible to install fresh on top of whatever is on there over the network o

Journal Journal: Banks (update two) 1

OK, just got a call from the branch manager of the bank in Colorado. Says he'll guarentee payment on the check. It was returned due to no fault of myself or my client. The problem is that Fleet has already sent the check back to me in the mail.

Journal Journal: Banks (update)

OK, the account that the check was drawn from definitely has the money to cover it. Their bank is telling them the check was endorsed wrong. I've had this problem before. Fleet has given me the following format for endorsing the business check.

Layble, Inc.
Account #xxxxxxxxx

Now the other bank is saying this is no good and need to endore it like this.
