Submission + - Wikipedia reports death before authorities knew (boston.com) 1

earthworm2 writes: Wikipedia had quite the scoop on the death of the wife of wrestler Chris Benoit. It reported her death on 401 GMT 6/25. This was eight hours before authorities discovered the bodies of the couple and their son. Authorities are now looking into who posted the information, in the hope of learning more about the alleged murder-suicide.
After all, I think it was Agatha Christie who said, "The killer always returns to the Wikipedia entry of the crime." Or something like that.

Submission + - Vista Security Claims Debunked (seclists.org)

[Send Bug Reports Here] writes: "Apparently Microsoft still hasn't learned that counting vendor acknowledged vulnerabilities isn't a good way to establish the security of an OS. As an analysis of Microsoft's claims on Full Disclosure shows, we see that the methodology used was badly flawed. A bug in Firefox (not to mention emacs), counts as a flaw for Linux, while IE bugs get ignored on Vista's chart. Then we see that vulnerabilities aren't vulnerabilities when they're security-challenged features such as Vista's Teredo. Also, there's far too little consideration given to severity, given that it stoops to counting even extra access restrictions on a file in OSX to have something to show. In short, the original Microsoft analysis was good PR and poor research."

Submission + - Net Neutrality dismissed by FTC (for now)

Altery writes: The FTC has issued a report on broadband competition in which the Commission argues that there is no evidence that Net Neutrality laws are needed. Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras said that legislators should "proceed with caution" in addressing the issue, adding that there are more questions than answers right now about what will and won't harm consumers. Still, the report made it clear that the FTC is on the lookout for abuse, but generally the report is a big win for the telecoms.

According to the Network World article the unnamed machine uses FPGAs to create sixty four 75Mhz CPUs which have a claimed combined performance of "100x" a normal desktop. The PRAM computer was built as part of a NSF grant that has the goal of developing APIs and compiler optimizations to support the PRAM system. As a bonus, if you submit the winning name for the new PRAM computer you can win $500.

Submission + - Wubi: new Ubuntu secret weapon?

An anonymous reader writes: There is a new Ubuntu installer out there that might bring about a small revolution in the Linux world. Think about an installer that allows you to install and uninstall Linux as any other application. An installer that does not require you to burn an ISO, that does not change your partitions, that does not change your bootloader, and still gives you a normal dual-boot setup, with full hardware access. Impossible? Enter Wubi. Wubi sits between a demo and a full installation, bringing you the best of both words. It works like a real installation but it is easy and safe to install and remove like a demo. Wubi was born as an independent (GPL) project, but it will become an official Ubuntu installer in Gutsy. Caveat: it is still in beta.

The beta copy of Leopard, the next version of Mac OS X handed to developers last week by Apple, is available on a file-sharing site for downloading. Apple's legal department tends to frown on things like that. Or, at least they did when the same thing happened with a beta copy of Tiger, the current version of Mac OS X released in April of 2005.

Submission + - Simulation of 9/11 attacks back building failure. (smh.com.au)

BlacKSacrificE writes: "Sydney Morning Herald reports lads at the Purdue University have created a computer simulation of the aircraft hitting that shows what caused the towers to collapse allegedly. While they are yet to address most of the conspiracy theories claims around the event regarding melting temperatures of steel, pools of thermite-like molten material pouring out of the buildings, and reports of midgets in clown uniforms with explosive squibs, it apparently backs the idea that all the central support beams were taken out, causing the collapse. A video of the simulation is not available online as far as i can find, but I would love to see it nonetheless."

Submission + - Is Vice President's Office Above The Law? (washingtonpost.com)

Frosty Piss writes: "US Vice President Dick Cheney's office has refused to comply with an executive order governing the handling of classified information for the past four years and recently tried to abolish the office that sought to enforce those rules, according to documents released by a congressional committee yesterday. Since 2003, the vice president's staff has not cooperated with an office at the National Archives and Records Administration charged with making sure the executive branch protects classified information. Cheney aides have not filed reports on their possession of classified data and at one point blocked an inspection of their office. After the Archives office pressed the matter, the documents say, Cheney's staff this year proposed eliminating it."
