Comment Thank you Mandriva ! (Score 0) 96

Thanks for making me have pleasure in using computers since Mandrake 7. Thanks for making the easiest OS to use even better !

Just some suggestions: 1) make zsh the default shell, and 2) use the smart installation system because rpmdrake only allows for rpm installs 3) switch your tools from perl to python ! Love you !

Senate Bill Calls For Open Source Electronic Health Records 170

An anonymous reader optimistically writes that new legislation has been introduced in the Senate that would call for a nationwide adoption of electronic health records built on open source. The bill does not seek to supplant proprietary alternatives, but instead to either augment or offer a cost effective alternative. "'We need advancements in health information technology across the board to improve the quality of care Americans receive,' said Senator Rockefeller, Chairman of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Health Care. 'To make this happen, we need universal access to affordable and interoperable health information technology — from small, rural health clinics to large, urban hospitals.'"

Threat To Net Neutrality In Europe 147

Narcissus writes to tell us that the European Parliament is planning a vote in the Industry, Transport, Energy (ITRE) committee that could reintroduce amendment 138 (currently amendment 46) which deals with safeguards to user rights on the internet and graduated response schemes. There are several online campaigns trying to drive awareness and action already but there is limited time to act. "The Council may propose a compromise version of amendment 138/46 that is completely neutralized, or that may even become the opposite of the original by allowing the 'three strikes' scheme instead of preventing it. According to the latest negotiations, am.138/46 wouldn't anymore be an article (that must be transposed by Member States in their law) but a mere recital that has just indicative value. It is urgent to contact the members of the ITRE committee to advise them to reject compromise with the Council that failed to respect the intent of the original amendment. The best would be once again to approve the amendment."

In my opinion Vortalgate is the ultimate abuse of power, imagine that you want to work in IT for the government, how can you even apply if the job postings there is the only way you can access the job and you are using linux ? Only MS users would get hired, the MS fortress is safe forever ! This is the ultimate abuse of power from the MS and the portuguese ministry of technology, i.e. if you do not have our shitty alternative to shitty flash you can't apply for a job !

The Portuguese prime minister have shown cases of corruption before and i suspect the same here and with the portuguese magellan laptop.

That being said the MS cancer will spread for everyone needing to exchange documents with the government since the government has made an agreement with MS to only use their products without any public offerings for better options.

And do no say i didn't warn the government, i wrote a letter on their site to both the ministry of technology and the prime minister warning of the deadlock of proprietary formats and the advantages of OSS.

Portugal is either corrupt or ignorant to the bone marrow.

I still have faith that this stupid economic crisis takes care of this kind of problems by makind manking go frugal.

Submission + - Microsoft stabbing Novell in the back?

LcdAngel writes: Microsoft recently made a deal with Novell regarding Suse Linux, not it appears they are stabbing them in the back with their Compare campaign.

Just look at this link alone that they provide as a survey of vulnerabilities. One commenter to that link says Was there a criteria for the exclusion of inclusion of vulnerabilities? Or did you just use all the articles from the RH Workstation Errata? For example, did you include the vulnerabilities in Red Hat's RHSA-2006:0726-6 (Wireshark) advisory? I would doubt most typical users would run Wireshark constantly on their workstation system and I'd be willing to bet these vulnerabilities also existed in the Windows version of Wireshark. Are either of these points factored into your analysis? I agree with the previous comments, I'd like to see the raw data used to generate these numbers.

Red Hat Releases Enterprise Linux 5 60

An anonymous reader writes "Red Hat has a new release out for Enterprise Linux, reports Ars Technica. Along with several anticipated new features, Enterprise Linux 5 marks the rollout of the RedHat Exchange (RHX), which will be a source for commercial third-party software applications. 'RHX will allow consumers to buy software support services for third-party open-source technologies like MySQL database software and SugarCRM customer management systems directly from Red Hat ... Linux vendor Novell, which recently partnered with Microsoft to provide stronger Windows interoperability, is already carving out a growing portion of the enterprise Linux market. Submission + - Red Hat launches virtually unlimited Enterprise

Robert writes: Linux distributor Red Hat has launched version 5 of its Enterprise Linux offering, including a new Advanced Platform version that enables users to run an unlimited number of virtual operating system images. The company had considered delivering a new package alongside the former ES, AS and WS versions that would enable unlimited use of the operating system on XenSource hypervisor technology, which has been rolled in to version 5. Instead it has decided to offer unlimited use on its top of the range package, much as Novell Inc's decided to do with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, which was released last July. The company has also decided to get rid of the ES, AS and WS versions.
