Comment Different Services need to be split (Score 4, Insightful) 209

The different connections need to be split.

For example, Verizon needs to have:

Verizon DSL 768kbps - 1Mbps
Verizon DSL 1.5Mbps - 3Mbps
Verizon DSL 4Mbps - 7Mbps
Verizon DSL 10Mbps - 15Mbps
Verizon FIOS 15Mbps
Verizon FIOS 25Mbps
Verizon FIOS 50Mbps

Obviously a low end DSL connection is not going to be the same as those who can order the 10-15Mbps DSL connection. And it is likely that the DSL 10-15Mbps connection is going to be different from the FIOS 15Mbps.

To group all of those connections into one Verizon line is completely misleading. And if they didn't take measurements from all of those connections, then then that makes the results even more suspect as the graph doesn't specify what type of connection they chose to test with.

Submission + - LibreOffice 3.3 released today (i-programmer.info)

mikejuk writes: Only four months after the formation of the Document Foundation by leading members of the OpenOffice.org community, it has launched LibreOffice 3.3, the first stable release of its alternative Open Source personal productivity suite for Windows, Macintosh and Linux.
Since the fork was announced at the end of September the number of developers "hacking" LibreOffice has gone from fewer than twenty to well over one hundred, allowing the Document Foundation to make its first release ahead of schedule.
The split of a large open source office suite comes at a time when it isn't even clear if there is a long term future for office suites at all. What is more puzzling is what the existence of two camps creating such huge codebases for a fundamental application type says about the whole state of open source development at this time. It clearly isn't the idealistic world it tries to present itself as.

Comment Re:Todo: Get your granny's AOL login (Score 2) 301

I typically follow the guideline that the right and center lanes are for slow people or those needing to turn off soon and the left lane is for passing/speeding; however, there are a few roads I break this guideline myself if the following applies:

- the road has a few left exits and I need to take one of those left exits myself
- heavy traffic where people (such as myself) with horrible depth perception can cause accidents
- traffic is moving between the right, center, and exit lanes frequently

To remedy the situation where I may not be moving fast enough for the person behind me, I will attempt to speed up or slow down to where the person has a gap to pass me on the right. I will match my speed to the gap in hopes they get the idea this is where they should pass me if they wish to move quicker than I am willing.

Driving exclusively in the left lane was a taboo I was uncomfortable with until after a series of close incidents that I didn't wish to repeat. I have since found peace with driving in the left lane on these particular roads and leave the dangers of the center and right lanes to those wishing to pass me.

Submission + - Will It Blend? The New Blender User Interface (linux.com)

jennifercloer writes: The 3D powerhouse Blender is arguably the most complicated piece of desktop software in the open source world. It handles every part of the workflow used to create a CGI film or a 3D game: creating objects, rigging them to move, animating them, controlling lighting, rendering scenes, and even editing the resulting video. Each release packs in more new features than most people can understand without consulting a textbook (or two). One of the down sides, though, is that over the years Blender has developed the reputation of being difficult to learn. Fortunately, the latest release takes on that challenge head-first, and makes some major improvements.

Submission + - Nvidia's Tegra 2 3D Details Leak

adeelarshad82 writes: A slideshow screenshot featuring snippets of a new Tegra 2 processor from Nvidia was leaked this weekend. The company is allegedly set to unveil its Tegra 2 3D processor at this year's Mobile World Congress in mid-February. According to the details, two editions of the processor are in the works: An AP25 version for mobile phones and a T25 for tablets. Both will ratchet up Tegra 2's dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor to 1.2 GHz instead of the common one GHz for Tegra 250-series CPUs. Nvidia expects that its processor will be able to hit 5,520 MIPS (million instructions per second).

Submission + - Italian Scientists Demonstrate Cold Fusion? (physorg.com) 2

Haffner writes: An article on physorg.com details what could be the first cold fusion reactor.

"Italian scientists Andrea Rossi and Sergio Focardi of the University of Bologna announced that they developed a cold fusion device capable of producing 12,400 W of heat power with an input of just 400 W....when the atomic nuclei of nickel and hydrogen are fused in their reactor, the reaction produces copper and a large amount of energy. The reactor uses less than 1 gram of hydrogen and starts with about 1,000 W of electricity, which is reduced to 400 W after a few minutes. Every minute, the reaction can convert 292 grams of 20C water into dry steam at about 101C. Since raising the temperature of water by 80C and converting it to steam requires about 12,400 W of power, the experiment provides a power gain of 12,400/400 = 31."

The whole point of this would be for them to still be able to publish the video tag as part of HTML5 and have room to expand upon it as needed.

Submission + - Should Slashdot support IPv6? (slashdot.org)

jiadran writes: The goal of this poll is to give Slashdot feedback about IPv6 demand for the site. Given that this is a very technical site, I would expect most readers to expect Slashdot to support IPv6 soon, but maybe I'm wrong?

Possible options:
- During World IPv6 Day only
- During World IPv6 Day, then decide based on the outcome
- Yes, permanent dual-stack (like Heise.de: http://www.h-online.com/features/The-big-IPv6-experiment-1165042.html)
- Just offer an IPv6 subdomain (e.g., ipv6.slashdot.org)
- Just offer IPv6 to registered DNS servers (like Google: http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/)
- Not yet, it's too early
- No, IPv4 is good enough and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
- Depends, does CowboyNeal support IPv6?

Submission + - Femtocells Used To Create Miniature 3G Basestation (eweekeurope.co.uk)

An anonymous reader writes: Femtocells could be used to create miniature 3G basestations on USB devices, according to Picochip

Femtocell maker Picochip has unveiled its vision for putting an entire 3G cellular basestation on a USB dongle at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Recent advances in semiconductor technology and signal processing, together with the advent of USB 3.0, make the concept of a USB femtocell a realistic possibility, according to Picochip. The company claims its picoXcell technology will allow operators to add HSPA+ home-basestation capabilities to appliances such as residential gateways, cable modems and set-top boxes via a USB device.

Femtocells – such as Vodafone’s Sure Signal – beef up 3G network strength in the home, using broadband for the uplink to the Internet, and have been touted as a way to solve the problem of 3G ‘not-spots’. Picochip claims that femtocells can also deliver faster data services, improve smartphone battery life and enable a variety of innovative ‘home zone’ services.

“It may sound incredible, but within a matter of months we’ll be able to fit a complete 3G basestation on a USB dongle,” said Rupert Baines, VP of Marketing at Picochip. “The last year has shown just how versatile femtocell technology is.”

Seems people have forgotten to mention (or a simple reminder) that the Humble Bundle 2 was offering 11 games for less than $10 bucks ... ALL with NO DRM!!!

I, too, was looking into purchasing some Ubisoft games, but instead of dealing with their DRM while paying 50+ bucks for a single game, I found myself getting pushed toward these indie developers who are selling non-DRM games of decent quality on the cheap! Even better, is that the Humble Bundle 2 had the option for me to decide to pay more later to reward the developers if, as I'm playing through these games, I found the developers did an awesome job and deserve more compensation for their hard work for a job well done (rather than being ripped off from the start if it in fact ending up being a poorly developed game)!

If you some how haven't heard of the Humble Bundle 2, you can research about it and sign up to hear about the next Humble Bundle release here.

I was for Palin up until this announcement too, but mainly because I believe in drilling and refining more oil instead of importing (good for the trade deficit, generating jobs, and saving your pocket book at the gas station until we can more efficiently decrease our dependence on oil and assuming drilling regulations and incident punishments are upheld). I, like most people, have a hard time finding people to match my preferences (pro-education improvements, pro-stem cell research, pro-choice, pro-tax cuts, pro-nuclear power, anti death row prisoner rights so they can be used for medical research or other beneficial purposes, anti-forever type welfare programs, anti-global police, pro-defense military and military research, pro-space exploration, lower national deficit, pro-capitalism with regulation against monopolies not for, etc)

I really wanted to believe that her stupidity on the news was simply biasness and journalism twisting her image, but I read her post on facebook about wikileaks and realized it was all true. My oil drilling cheerleader is definitely not the brightest crayon in the box.
