You need to flex your imagination. A kid fabricates a video implicating his enemy in some crime that would appeal to the barely restrained hatred of internet trolls, a hatred always ready to manifest itself. He recreates the target's bedroom, posters, etc., and makes sure the video finds its way into just the right hands, then riles his audience to a fever pitch. That kid wouldn't even have to be particularly malicious, just ignorant; he probably wouldn't even imagine it ending as badly as it could. Look, this is no different than any other kind of fraud, except that the apparent solutionâ""internet justice"â"is being lauded instead of being more aptly compared to a crowd of pitchfork-wielding racists (for instance; replace with any non-internet, real-life trolls).

Good gods, fallacy heaped upon fallacy. You speak in favor of "society." Your societyâ"the society that you believe shares your values. Just wait until that society's values change and they turn on you. You really think "today's sophisticated mob" (trying hard not to laugh at this) would last long, unrestrained, before picking up weapons? Have a nice life. Who modded this up?

I was in London hanging out with a Swiss-English guy, and we were talking about health chemistry. I kept saying "carbs," and he remarked, "Boy, you Americans really do have an abbreviation for everything." I hadn't even thought about saying the entire word. No time to waste, I suppose! :p

THANK YOU. I cannot stand this irritating get-off-my-lawnism that seems to think that the only "news for nerds" is gnome-kde flamewars. I mean jesus, people even bitched about the "interesting bash commands/scripts/etc" stories. Come on, if you really hate slashdot that much, start your own site solely for stories about how websites that aren't viewable on lynx are an abomination of nature or whatever it is you people consider "real" news for nerds. Idiots.

Submission + - Mac, BSD prone to decade old attacks 7

BSDer writes: An Israeli security researcher published a paper few hours ago, detailing attacks against Mac, OpenBSD and other BSD-style operating systems. The attacks, says Amit Klein from Trusteer enable DNS cache poisoning, IP level traffic analysis, host detection, O/S fingerprinting and in some cases even TCP blind data injection. The irony is that OpenBSD boasted their protection mechanism against those exact attacks when a similar attack against the BIND DNS server was disclosed by the same researcher mid 2007. It seems now that OpenBSD may need to revisit their code and their statements. According to the researcher, another affected party, Apple, refused to commit to any fix timelines. It would be interesting to see their reaction now that this paper is public.
