Comment Re:How does custom firmware "lose sales" (Score 2, Informative) 190

If you own a PSP (I do) and have not yet seen or just don't know what "custom firmware" really does maybe you should go see.. Custom firmware allows you to turn a stock PSP into something really usable. Everything from real time GPS mapping to SQL management to real time e-mail and messaging apps. There are several hundred high quality home brew apps and games available. Note these are not available with the stock firmware. Were it hit sales is in the game area as there are so many home brew games (free) that are better than what can be purchased. There is a point - more "might" buy a PSP for "increased usability and features" HOWEVER it does take a bit of hacker ability both in hardware and software to use custom firmware so it is not "for the masses" and only adopted by the few... Sony is Sony with the PSP just like the PS3. I am sure the new 'Go' will be no different. Sony always seems to blow their chances. If they did it right there would be no need for 'custom firmware' or other hack attempts to add something as simple as an IM, email or real browser to a device.

The XP install is less than a year old. Built this computer August of last year. Both SATA drives are Seagate Barracudas SATA 3G, identical specs except in size xp-250G win7-500G split in to two partitions.. I did say IDENTICAL hardware and XP should not have "slowed" after such a short period of time. My laptop is over two years old with XP and it is not 'slow' by any sense of the word. Any poorly maintained OS environment will slow over time. IMHO the way you care for it makes a difference...

No you are not the only one who feels that way. I installed a second SATA drive on my XP machine and installed Win 7 RC. Loaded all the same software as I have on the XP side, run the same services as I have on the XP side and low and behold Win 7 smokes XPs performance. The only real difference is the software/drivers install were some of the software/drivers are "vista" or Win 7 specific. However not all vista flavor drivers worked but XP drivers did. Other than two driver incompatibilities and a re-occurring issue with RealPlayer I have had no problems. I am not a big MS/Windows fan as my past post suggest but I am impressed with Win 7. They are doing somethings right but could still do way better in many area...

XP does run on much older hardware than you might expect at least would as my former work laptop could not update to SP1 (specs PIII 650, 6GB HD, 256 ram "yes that was max ram")its fan died and I did notknow till it was to late (cooked). However I do have a have another machine for programming PLCs other than my work laptop and it runs SP1 (specs PIII 400, 6GB HD, 1.3gig Ram). Know it well as I just got done moving keys from laptop to the other machine and a usb drive. LOL Froze the laptop overnight just for that purpose.. Any way on the Win 7 front I have just ordered a new drive for my win XP daily driver to install 7 on. As I don't cotton up to Windows all that much I have had to fall back to it since my husbands PC went south (Slackware) and I turned over my main machine to him (Slackware). It is better for him to have such a machine OS as the sites he likes to visit during his private time is a bit 'risque' for a Windows box.. My XPs are tweaked way out and trimmed with all the possible goodies one might expect from a geekette. As a matter of fact it has many of the same tools as my Slackware box in their win flavors... AND remember to support the open source software. If you use it - DONATE!! It is that simple.. Now if they would just make windows as easy to configure as Linux we would be good to go.. Did I say that???

Real easy here folks. me I am digital, self made antenna - no cable or sat - hooked to the net for everything I want to see. I have seen the same thing. Sometimes it is almost "instant". As soon as the computer is recognized, within a minute, attacks begin. As indicated usually does not require any interaction at all.. Gee gives PnP a new meaning. I would give an educated guess that your connection has a lot to do with it.. Static vs Dynamic, known services running on the same IP.. It is fun to build a machine, install a windows flavor and DMZ it just to see what happens. It is also a great "show and tell" tool for the virtue of a Linux distro over windows.. "Watch this"
