HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Protections Fully Broken 682

gEvil (beta) writes "According to an article at BoingBoing, the processing keys for the AACS encryption scheme used by both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray video discs have been extracted, and a crack has been released. What this means is that there is now a method to extract the copy-protected content of any HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc out there. This is different from Muslix64's previous crack, which only extracted the volume key for each disc. This new method bypasses this step and allows anyone to extract the data without first requiring the volume key."

Submission + - Leaked letter from RIAA to ISPs

John Doe writes: A leaked letter from the RIAA to a US ISP sheds new light on the inner workings of the RIAA and the lengths they'll go to extract a settlement from those they suspect of file sharing without having to resort to so much as a John Doe lawsuit. The letter asks ISPs for additional cooperation in correctly identifying subscribers and communicating a new offer of $1,000 for those who agree to early settlements. But there's a catch: 'n order to be eligible for the Pre-Doe settlement option and $1,000 savings, ISPs will have to hold on to its log files for at least 180 days. This gives the RIAA ample time to pursue a lawsuit and subpoena if the suspected infringer elects not to enter a settlement.' The RIAA will also be launching a brand-new website, p2plawsuits.com, to 'provide consumers with information about the RIAA's lawsuits and how to enter into a costly settlement in order to avoid litigation.'

Submission + - Hackers further expose HD-DVD, Blu-Ray DRM

RootWind writes: Two months after the initial finding of the "volume keys" by muslix64, Engadget reports that arnezami also of Doom9 forums has discovered the "processing keys." This discovery allows the full unlocking, decryption, and backup of all currently released HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies (at least AACS-wise), instead of decrypting each individually through "volume keys." It seems the DRM arms battle is in full swing.

Submission + - PlaysForSure: Microsoft's New Mobile DRM

snib writes: "This morning Microsoft announced, in addition to the new Windows Mobile 6 OS, that new PlaysForSure devices, including cell phones, will sport a new type of DRM that allows for "a more flexible way to transfer content between devices." Microsoft calls this new technology PlayReady, and says it is the answer to mobile industry pressure to make content transfer with DRM simpler. Notable supporters of this new standard include AT&T and Verizon, and Microsoft says that Windows Mobile 6 will also play a part in the new DRM's gradual acceptance."

Star Wars - The Force Unleashed 122

CVG has the news from the front cover of Game Informer's March edition: the next-gen Star Wars title LucasArts has been working on is called Force Unleashed. Set in the relatively unexplored time period between Episodes III and IV, you'll be taking on the role of a dark side agent assisting Darth Vader to hunt down the remainder of the Jedi. The game will use the much-touted Eurphoria physics engine LucasArts has been working on, and will feature a number of elaborate force-using effects. Highlights from the game may include (spoilers ... feel free to look away ...) a fight with Shaak-Ti in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and assisting Vader in an attempt on the Emperor's life. There's even talk of allowing you to play out 'alternate paths', in which the dark side ultimately wins the Galactic Civil War. No word on a release date, but the game will come primarily to 360 and PC. PSP, PS2, and DS ports are being farmed out to another developer.

Submission + - RealClimate rebutts cosmic ray theory.

TapeCutter writes: A recent slashdot story reported on an article by the ex-editor of New Scientist, Nigel Calder. RealClimate have taken issue with what they call "bizarre calculus that takes evidence for solar forcing of climate as evidence against greenhouse gases for current climate change". They have posted a rebuttal to Calder's article that basically concludes: "No trend = no explanation for current changes".

It should also be noted that Calder's article ended with an advertisment for his new book "The Chilling Stars".

Submission + - For women nothing's like the smell of men's sweat

gollum123 writes: "From CNN, Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley said women who sniffed a chemical found in male sweat experienced elevated levels of an important hormone, along with higher sexual arousal, faster heart rate and other effects ( http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/02/08/men.sweat.reu t/index.html ). They said the study, published this week in the Journal of Neuroscience, represents the first direct evidence that people secrete a scent that influences the hormones of the opposite sex. The researchers measured levels of the hormone cortisol in the saliva of 48 female undergraduates at Berkeley, average age of about 21, after the women took 20 sniffs from a jar of androstadienone. Cortisol levels in the women who smelled androstadienone shot up within roughly 15 minutes and stayed elevated for up to an hour. Consistent with previous research, the women also reported improved mood, higher sexual arousal, and had increased blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. The study did not determine whether the increase in cortisol levels triggered mood or arousal changes or whether those changes themselves caused the cortisol elevation."

Submission + - Stupid Ideas That Make All The Difference

bobjase writes: I've been waiting for the last few years for a 8 or 16 port SD (or CF/MMC/whatever) reader that runs a RAID 0+1 across the cards (bitwise) and has a S-ATA II connection. It could fit in a 5.25" slot and read/write faster than any spinning drive ever could — easily maxing out the SATA-II bandwidth. All the technology has been staring us in the face for the last 4 years. Multi Card readers cost $10. RAID controllers are built into everything and can cost as little as $20. The whole stupid device could cost $50 and with a little shopping, you could get 2GB SD cards for $10 or even less. Am I crazy or would this thing change the world? Why doesn't anyone make this? Would you buy one?

Submission + - Security Clearances

ellindigo writes: "I work as a UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator for a large corporation. My company is submitting me for a TS-SCI with Full Polygraph security clearance, and today I attended a meeting where they described how the process works. They stressed that the questioning and the polygraph would be very invasive and would include my lifestyle, past egregious acts (I suppose we all have at least one), and anything else they find worthy of attention. My question for Slashdot readers is this — should I go forward with the application process? If I go through all of this scrutiny and don't get the clearance, will the government keep those records on me? What are the ramifications of being documented this way?"

Submission + - Porn Industry May Not Decide Format War

nixkuroi writes: MSNBC Reports that the porn industry may be fudging their numbers and may not be the "decider" of the next winning format. Even more stunning is that on page 3 of the article, Vivid Entertainment says that despite Sony's refusal to license to the adult industry, they've found a way to replicate Blu-Ray technology and will release Debbie Does Dallas on both formats.
