Submission + - ADHD Drug to treat Cocaine and Marijuana addiction

Philistine writes: A recent study may have allowed seven crack cocaine addicts to live out their wildest dreams. Each of them was paid to test the effects of mixing cocaine with the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder drug atomoxetine (also known as Strattera). The medication creates a sensation similar to a low dose of cocaine, making it easier for addicts to kick their habit without suffering from withdrawal symptoms. During rehabilitation, patients often relapse and use their drug of choice. This first study showed that even if someone slips up and uses cocaine while taking atomoxetine in rehab, the combination will not kill them. Three clinical trials are currently underway to test the effectiveness of using the same drug to treat marijuana dependence in adolescents and adults. Is it really a good idea to replace marijuana with a drug that creates a sensation similar to cocaine? Even if marijuana is not a gateway drug, this treatment could certainly cause kids to develop a taste for coke.

Submission + - Xandros Exchanges Protocols With Micorosft (osweekly.com)

An anonymous reader writes: OSWeekly.com reports on Xandros most likely dropping out of the consumer OS market and focusing its efforts on the enterprise market. The author writes, "It looks like Microsoft is opening up the doors to Xandros as they will have licensed access to Microsoft's Exchange protocols. Xandros is looking to integrate Exchange ActiveSync so that it will then interact with their own Scalix Mail Servers. More on this can be found at this link. Besides demonstrating what Xandros is hoping to gain from their new Microsoft alliance, we are also seeing signs that Xandros really has a difficult time focusing on one product and seeing it through to near perfection. This may sound like a tall order, but honestly, I do not think so. My reasoning for being so harsh is that for sometime now, Xandros has offered a fairly solid option for the business user looking to take a light dip into the Linux waters. The distribution feels so much like Windows XP that it's almost frightening.

Submission + - HP Plans It's Own Linux PCs to Beat Dell (madpenguin.org)

thomas writes: HP is working on Linux PCs of its own to beat Dell, which shouldn't be too difficult considering Dell's minimal efforts in promoting Linux and open source. MadPenguin.org writes, "I think the biggest thing that ticked me off about Dell's Ubuntu offerings is that they put Canonical in charge of promoting their boxes. This is stupid, and they know darn well it should have been the other way around. I would like to see HP give both Windows and Ubuntu an equal mind share. Granted, there will need to be clarity regarding the legalities surrounding MP3 and WMV playback, but if someone would jump onto the clue train here and begin selling portable music players from iRiver (among others), which support OGG Vorbis, and allow users to provide YouTube videos showing how to legally (unless the US RIAA have changed their tune again ) rip CDs you own for playback onto your brand new OGG player, it should be fine.
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Comedy Group Almost Defeats APEC Security (abc.net.au)

ajdlinux writes: Members of the Australian comedy group The Chaser were arrested today after attempting to breach security at the APEC Leaders Conference in Sydney. Chas Licciardello and Julian Morrow were arrested, along with nine crew members, just a short distance away from the InterContinental Hotel where President Bush is staying, having already cleared one police checkpoint disguised as a Canadian motorcade. ""No particular reason we chose Canada," said Taylor. "We just thought they'd be a country who the cops wouldn't scrutinise too closely, and who feasibly would only have three cars in their motorcade — as opposed to the 20 or so gas guzzlers that Bush has brought with him."" More coverage at the Sydney Morning Herald and the ABC.

Submission + - AMD to open ATI specs (0xdeadbeef.com)

An anonymous reader writes: AMD has announced they are releasing the specs for all new radeon chipsets, and will be working with the open source community to develop a fully functional 2d and 3d graphics driver. AMD appears to be following in Intel's footsteps with upcoming releases. If AMD is successfull NVidia will have real competition in the GNU/Linux gaming arena. While past support by ATI was unsatisfactory the new AMD buyout appears to be having some effect.
HP

Submission + - Big Box Technician Lashes Out Against HP (blogspot.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A Big Box Technician speaks out against HP, and their warranty services provided by their retail stores.

From the article:
HP2: It looks like the week you put that claim in, we closed a service center, and opened another one. The label you got and used was a label to the wrong service center.
BBT: So the unit has been forwarded to the right service center by now, correct?
HP2: No.

Despite the PC vs Mac ideologies now, many wonder what the best retail PC is. In an effort to provide more information suitable for prospective buyers, this blog has condemned the use of HP products by means of their warranty service and customer service agents. I know next time I'm looking to buy something I'll keep this in mind.

KDE

Submission + - KDE 4.0 Beta 1 Released (kde.org)

An anonymous reader writes: August 2, 2007 (The INTERNET). The KDE Community is happy to announce the immediate availability of the first Beta release for KDE 4.0. This release marks the beginning of the integration process which will bring the powerful new technologies included in the now frozen KDE 4 libraries to the applications. Almost two months after the foundations of KDE 4 have been laid with the first alpha, KDE enters the stage of a full freeze of the library interface. From now on, the applications will focus on integrating the new technology refined during the last months, and the library developers will try to fix all bugs found during this process. No new applications will enter the official KDE modules and usability and accessibility work is of course an ongoing process. In the following weeks KDE developers will be able to add features to their applications until the next beta is released and the application features will be frozen as well.

Submission + - Pirate Bay earns 20,000 Euros a day (rixstep.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: controverisal pro-piracy website the piratebay likes to portray itself as an innocent hobby site that provides a free index without censorship, but recent facts show that the site is earning up to 20,000 Euros per day from its advertising. Taking in money on this scale puts a different slant on the motives behind the Swedish filesharing site, and could open up the runners of the site to prosecution for profiting from copyright infringement.

Submission + - Multiformat Listening Test at 64kbps

Anonymous writes: The Hydrogenaudio community is conducting a "Public, Multiformat Listening Test" (http://www.listening-tests.info/mf-64-1/) to see which codecs (AAC, WMA Pro and Vorbis) provide the best sound quality when compressing samples at 64kbps.

This test is open until the 5th of August and seems to be much, much harder than what one would expect, even for experienced developers of sound codecs, at bitrates that the public would find "too little", as the comments on the thread at the discussion forums (see: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?show topic=56397).

Do you think that you have good ears? That 64kbps is "too little"? Then try it for yourself and participate. Your participation will help us improve the codecs so that they are even closer to being "transparent" at such "low" bitrates.
