Submission + - First Android based netbook

An anonymous reader writes: China based Skytone famous for making skype headsets have brought out a $100 device, the Alpha-680 netbook running Google Android for its OS. The device has Wifi, Ethernet, USB ports and an SD card slot. After watching the video though, I get a feeling that the boot time is somewhat long. IMO good enough for browsing.

Submission + - Amazon is bullying a Startup because of its name (techcrunch.com)

Marcus writes: Online retail juggernaut Amazon isn't too pleased with the name Swiss startup Amazee picked for its social collaboration service, and is now trying to persuade the young company to change it to something else. This has apparently been going on for a couple of months, but now Amazee is stepping up and throwing some good old fighting words out there.

Submission + - Not All Cores Created Equal (gcn.com)

joabj writes: "Virginia Tech researchers have found that the performance of programs running on multicore processors can vary from server to server, and even from core to core. Factors such as which core handles interrupts, or which cache holds the needed data can change from run to run. Such resources tend to be allocated arbitrarily now. As a result, program execution times can vary up to 10 percent. So if you're wondering why your code ran faster yesterday than today, and you're running it on a multiucore processor, you may want to take a look at how the CPU is handling the processes. The good news is that the VT researchers are working on a library that will recognize inefficient behavior and rearrange things in a more timely fashion."

Submission + - Xen and Windows Gaming

extremescholar writes: I'm a linux fan and I like to game, who doesn't? I want to run Linux, but I want gaming, but I hate to dual boot. Xen will virtualize machines with near native performance. With a VT enabled processor, I can run Windows in Xen. Here comes the tricky part. With Xen, you can get video that one can VNC to, but what about graphics cards? If I have dual graphics cards, can I not assign one (via Driver Domain Configuration) to the Windows domU? Would this not be the same for Sound and USB ports? Then I can game on?

Submission + - Microsofts OneCare improves antivirus test ranking (computerworld.com)

Fredtalk writes: "Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Live OneCare climbed from March's dead last to 14th place in a test of 17 antivirus programs, an Austrian security researcher reported today. Andreas Cleminti's AV Comparatives latest test pitted the top antivirus software against the 20,000-some threats that debuted during the last three months to measure how well each could finger unknown exploits. Only one program, ESET LLC's NOD32 AntiVirus was pegged by Cleminti with the highest-possible "Advanced+" label."

Submission + - We're responsible for Mars, too!?

grikdog writes: Science News is reporting global warming on Mars, evidently caused by reduced albedos causing warming and greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions at Mars' southern ice cap. Gee, and I thought the Viking landers were electric.
