This is the most insightful thing I've seen on Slashdot in a long time. Thank you for writing it out and posting it here. I hope the currently helpless but not ambivalent segment will gain enough power to make the larger group that is simply ambivalent safe, whether that requires defeating the denialists or simply working around them to ensure that humanity and its technological civilization actually survives without regressing to barbarism.

Calling his actual personal decisions on business management genius is more wrong than wrong conveys. The lost goodwill that Musk has burned through has a real monetary value. It could have been prevented by simply having someone on staff who understands what the word ethics means. As a manager Musk should know how to delegate, and ethical thinking can be delegated to those trained in it. And every one of his ventures has numerous people with the right training. Scientists study that so that their experiments don't make them the new Dr. Mengele (although that ship sailed with Neuralink and its animal cruelty), and Engineers study it so that their designs actually benefit people instead of causing unnecessary deaths. That ship may have also sailed with the Autopilot fiasco. These mistakes could have been avoided by consulting and then listening to someone trained in ethics.

I want you to live a long life and grow old watching grass grow over Putin's grave, rather than he over yours when he kills you along with the others, either by the death squad for recruitment refusal or as conscripts in the field. You are an idiot. Russia is bombing the citizens of Ukraine in their homes, and you are obsessing over international trade that is negligible to everyone outside of Russia. In any case, even the Russian concern with this trade is irrelevant given Putin's recklessness causing the loss of the past 30 years of growth of FDI into Russia. There is no reversing that either. Don't try to play economics here. This is war. And I do know that very well and in more ways than your pitiful mind can imagine. When you deal with weapons and the men pointing them then the world is exactly that. The time for drawing room bullshit ends when the outcome is death for one side or the other. And that is exactly the situation that Russia forced Ukraine into by invading. Ukraine should have kept its nukes after the Union fell instead of believing Russia. It should have nuked Moscow and everywhere else Putin could hide to ensure his quick death as soon as the Russian invaders started moving into Ukraine.

The reality is that this Russian disinformation campaign is an easily recognizable part of their cyber warfare strategy. It also has a much longer history than your paranoia has allowed you to see. Take a look here for an in depth article from 2014 on its origin in Soviet dogma. Or this for more on their "new style" of warfare. If you don't have access to either that is your problem, but in that case you can still read this which also does a good job showing that this is the Russian preferred approach before combat, intended to prepare the ground for combat. Remember the first gulf war was in 1991 because that is the only point you likely missed in training. For spectators though, the Russian strategy is to attack the institutions of its targets to disrupt their society. It always has been.

At Musk's directive SpaceX has limited the StarLink service to Ukraine so that its coverage excludes the territory that Russia has occupied. This artificially limits the communications network of the Ukrainian soldiers fighting to reclaim their own homes. Musk has decided he will create a new border without any input from Ukraine, effectively partitioning its territory like a 21st century version of the Nazi-occupied Poland.
