Handmade vs. Commercially Produced Ethernet Cables 837

An anonymous reader writes "We have a T1 line coming into our satellite office and we rely fairly heavily on it to transfer large amounts of data over a VPN to the head office across the country. Recently, we decided to upgrade to a 20 Mbit line. Being the lone IT guy here, it fell on me to run cable from the ISP's box to our server room so I went out and bought a spool of Cat6. I mentioned the purchase and the plan to run the cable myself to my boss in head office and in an emailed response he stated that it's next to impossible to create quality cable (ie: cable that will pass a Time Domain Reflectometer test) by hand without expensive dies, special Ethernet jacks and special cable. He even went so far as to say that handmade cable couldn't compare to even the cheapest Belkin cables. I've never once ran into a problem with handmade patch cables. Do you create your own cable or do you bite the bullet and buy it from some place?"

Sounds kind of like the "possession of criminal tools" charges so many cases have added on, when said "tools" are ANYTHING used to commit the crime. Always seemed to me just a way for prosecutors to add an extra set of random charges for extending a sentence, or extra bargaining room for a plea.

Submission + - HP-35s calculator announced and withdrawn 1

leighklotz writes: "HP announced their 35th anniversary version of the groundbreaking HP-35 calculator on July 11th, and the New York Times featured [reg warning] it in their Circuits section today. Sadly, today was also the day that HP apparently withdrew the product to correct reported manufacturing defects. For calculator geeks, note that it has a big prominent ENTER button and reportedly features good tactile feedback. No news about the recall on HP's website..."

Submission + - Why Y! Answers Got Big but Google Answers flopped

blogdig writes: http://www.thebizofcoding.com/2007/01/why_yahoo_an swers_is_flourishi.html The simplicity of Yahoo! Answers is at the source of its surging popularity. Anyone can ask questions or provide answers. Yahoo's Rating and Reviews platform gives Reputation points to participants. Highly rated answers build a participants Reputation incentivising good participation. Google Answers on the other hand has been retired. It is no longer accepting new questions. When Google tried to build an online paid "Answers" product it made two mistakes: 1) Google blocked the Mass Participation that is typically required to build vibrant online communities....

Submission + - Wikipedia links no longer help your Page Rank

Mrs. Grundy writes: "Wikipedia has started automatically adding rel="NOFOLOW" to all external links in an effort to combat link spam. Since wikipedia pages are hip-deep in high page rank they attract the unsavory sort of character hoping to gain a little love from Google on their coattails. By making pages NOFOLOW they essentially deny conferring any page rank points from google and hopefully reduce the incentive to spam the pages with offtopic links. This topic has come up before and the community voted to remove the NOFOLLOW business in 2005. Will this move actually reduce link spam or is even the potential clickthrough valuable enough without the boost in Google's ranking? And how does the value of ranking sites based on links change as more and more popular sites start tagging (eh...labeling) their links NOFOLLOW?"

Submission + - Dual booting Windows Vista and BSD

laffer1 writes: "I'm attempting to setup a dual boot environment on my PC. Previously, I had Windows XP SP2 and MidnightBSD working with System Commander. Today I was able to download a copy of Vista x64 from Technet.

My goal was to wipe the XP partition and install Windows Vista Ultimate x64 without effecting my MidnightBSD install on my second hard drive. After several attempts, I'm left with a non booting system.

So far, I've tried setting up the boot menu using EasyBCD 1.52 from Vista. I tried adding an entry and also using neogrub from the software. After rebooting and trying to boot MidnightBSD, my kernel crashed and my partition table was wiped on the vista drive. (first sata hard disk) I'm not using system commander as its not clear if it will work with 64bit windows.

MidnightBSD and FreeBSD are very similar at this point.

Has anyone successfully dual booted Vista and any BSD? What configuration should I use?"

Submission + - 10 reasons not to get Vista

BillGatesInABikini writes: APC Magazine has an interesting counterpoint [http://www.apcmag.com/5049/10_reasons_not_to_get_ vista] to the hype leading up to Vista's consumer launch — reasons to not get Vista. Most of the points will be familiar to the /. crowd, but it's a good summary of the key issues for those unaware, and includes some being down played by Microsoft. Interestingly, it looks like Aussies are going to pay through the nose for it too.

Submission + - Viz Media To Offer Death Note As Digital Download

Zarabadoo writes: "As an anime fan, I find This story on Anime on DVD interesting. Viz Media has apparently secured the rights to distribute the popular Death Note anime via digital downloading. The idea of being able to get a legal download of a really cool anime at the same time it is airing in Japan is enticing. I can see it being good for the future possibility of getting all those obscure titles I like legally and, hopefully, give the Japanese studios and creators a fair cut. On the other side it can fail and the blame will fall on the fansub community and after the smoke clears from the lawyer onslaught, we will have less than before. I am a torn individual."
