Two Weeks with the Wii 458

In the 80s, kids of my generation cut their teeth on Super Mario Bros.. They went through high school with Mario Kart, and bonded with college friends playing Super Smash Bros. By 1999, though, the N64 had long since proven that Nintendo's dominance in American videogaming was over. The GameCube that followed was largely a disappointment. Nintendo failed to interest third party developers, and frustrated fans with long-delayed chapters of the Mario, Zelda, and Metroid franchises. Coming into this no-longer-next generation of consoles, Nintendo announced they were aiming for a Revolution, and then confused everyone by renaming it Wii. Their actions left a lot of people wondering if the company still had what it took to compete with committed powerhouses like Microsoft and Sony. The launch lineup is kind of tepid, and the controls really do take some getting used to. We've already established that they're not aiming to compete in the graphics race. So what is the console really like? Why is it selling so quickly? What does it have to offer? I've had two weeks to find out. Read on, so that you can get a feel for the system you'll definitely be playing (if not owning) at some point in the future.

Wii, DS, Not Cannibals 98

Nintendo President Iwata, GameSpot reports, has stated that the Wii and the DS are not 'eating' each other. That is to say, the Wii's brisk sales reports have not harmed the high demand for Nintendo's portable system. From the article: "'Some analysts say the largest rival of the Wii is the DS,' he told the Reuters news service. 'But if you take a look at DS sales in the United States in the Thanksgiving week or DS sales in Japan in the week of the Wii launch, there has been little impact.' By the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007, Nintendo now believes it will have sold 6 million Wiis and 20 million combined units of the DS and DS Lite. It currently predicts its annual profit will total 145 billion yen (around $1.26 billion), an increase of more than 60 percent, with annual sales rising 45 percent to 740 billion yen (approximately $6.44 billion). Slashdot Posting Bug Infuriates Haggard Admins 262

Last night we crossed over 16,777,216 comments in the database. The wise amongst you might note that this number is 2^24, or in MySQLese an unsigned mediumint. Unfortunately, like 5 years ago we changed our primary keys in the comment table to unsigned int (32 bits, or 4.1 billion) but neglected to change the index that handles parents. We're awesome! Fixing is a simple ALTER TABLE statement... but on a table that is 16 million rows long, our system will take 3+ hours to do it, during which time there can be no posting. So today, we're disabling threading and will enable it again later tonight. Sorry for the inconvenience. We shall flog ourselves appropriately. Update: 11/10 12:52 GMT by J : It's fixed.

Boxxet, a Tool for Automatic Webpage Generation 109

tkajstura writes "New Scientist is reporting on 'a new tool [called Boxxet that] offers to create websites on any subject, allowing web surfers to sit back, relax and watch a virtual space automatically fill up with relevant news stories, blog posts, maps and photos.' It uses an algorithm based on unique word count to filter an index and integrate relevant subject information into the page, called a 'Boxxet.' The tool will first be available by invitation only, opening to the general public by the end of April 2006."

Journal Journal: well, fuck 1

Yup, as it turns out, if you want a girl to like you, you have to make some effort.

Well, fuck. I doubt I'll find anyone quite like you, but I guess I'm going to have to find someone that's good enough, if I want to get into a relationship...ever.

This event [Big Screw] is still run; this year's event happened this week.

See here for a slightly outdated list of winners and charities; Chuck Vest (Make a Wish Foundation) won in 2004 and Prof. George Verghese (Doctors Without Borders) won in 2003. The 2005 winner will be announced tomorrow evening, and will be presented with the four foot long, left-handed aluminum wood screw.

Journal Journal: Getting the Word Out

Almost every time an article comes up on the front page about the latest badly written, overbroad copyright legislation, it is followed by several hundred comments talking about what a disaster X legislation is, and how we, as slashdotters, should publicly protest this calamity.

But the problem is, these cries of injustice never make it outside of slashdot. The people who read the comments already realize the problems, we are simply preaching to the choir.

Journal Journal: A slashdot feature idea 1

I've always thought It would be interesting to be able to see what articles were rejected and never actually posted to the site. Of course, most of these would probably be crap (LOLOLOLOGNAAGOATSE.CX and hay guys check this out), but it seems that there are alot of stories that the editors just don't have space for. Does anyone know if rejected stories are kept on the servers? If so, it might be cool to have a subscriber option to view these stories.

Wow. Toolage. Hosage. Being at MIT definately does those things to you.

On another note, I have several new journalization-type things (lj, for example, and an outdated one on my webspace). If you really want to know, just send me a message and I'll get back to you on that.

Once again, the future gets in the way of the present.

Outi and I broke up last night.

Nobody reads this, but oh well.

Journal Journal: Graduation/Commencement

I graduated from high school on Sunday, June 8th. I'm officially free.

My only question is, what's up with the graduation/commencement aspect of the ceremony? The last time I looked, graduation meant "Conferral or receipt of an academic degree or diploma marking completion of studies." Commencement, on the other hand, means "A beginning; a start."

I just saw a beautiful thing.

I was browsing on sun.com, looking at things I can't afford- namely, Sun servers.
