It's the modern day panhandler, without the stigma of sitting on the corner. Obviously there are worthwhile causes. But there are also plenty that aren't. It's more about marketing and less about the need. Wasn't one set up for Lady Gaga's dog walker who got shot when the guy got shot working for one of the richest entertainers out there.

5G is the first to make it reasonable for home usage. It's so much easier to roll out and upgrade than wired to the home its not even funny. Most towns will never see municipal fiber as the utility companies own the vast majority of poles.

For me the big thing is they need to market it better so people understand that with a static installation of your 5G antenna you won't have the outages you have walking around your house. It's not simply expanding your cell phone to serve your whole house, it's a drop in replacement for cable.

If nothing else the competition will force cable to step up their game and offerings.

The FAA covers launch and reentry. There would be no oversight over systems performance during in orbit flight and beyond. For example, a lunar lander would need zero approvals from the FAA other than at launch time. NASA are the only ones with the experience for this sort of oversight. But the point isn't that NASA isn't doing it, it that nobody other than SpaceX will and in my eyes that's a mistake.

Comment Residential 5G is the answer (Score 1) 161

The major hold up of fiber is that in most places the poles are owned by the power utility. Municipal fiber is successful in towns that own the poles. 5G alleviates this. Yes, there are locations that this will have issues. But the vast majority of even rural areas can be addressed with it.

Comment Wow, a brushless motor (Score 1) 145

For a brushed motor you control the power by manipulating the voltage. Your 3 speed room fan doesn't use the same power at all 3 speeds. Each button simply changes the voltage supply.

Without reading much of it it seems they are just putting some type of patentable twist to make brushless motors their own. Seems to me they want to advocate brushled motors going away, which is fine and dandy. Brushless motors have many advantages, they do tend to last long for example, but their is a complexity cost associated with it. For example the 3 stage fan blower for my furnace would probably never recoup the added cost of swapping it out for a brushless version.

NYC has actually been for the most part shut down since May. Outdoor restaurants were open for a bit. The financial hit the city has taken is likely the highest in the world.

That said, what state has done as far as covering up their initial mistakes as far as nursing homes is another matter. I don't fault them for the mistakes, they got hit hard and early while the CDC was preaching the wash your hands approach to solving the pandemic.

However the cover up to make themselves into Covid handling demigods is disgusting. And as much as I despise DeBlasio, thats all on Cuomo
