Comment The Reality (Score 1) 270

Once the once potentially great console starts to gather momentum , gathering the interests of investors, larger game studios and so forth. Once money is on the cards the ideals of a completely open and hackable console will slowly start to become less important.

Somebody has to make money from this and to stand a real chance of success it has to have the backing of major game studios. The console will need some killer apps , maybe even exclusive titles. Without it this will end up just a hackers dream. I imagine the first things that will get ported will be emulators such as Mame, WinUAE etc. In the end it will just be a glorified GP32x / Pandora that plugs into your TV with a few shitty ports of TuxRacer and a ton of casual games like Super Angry Tortoise Catapault Brothers!

Still I would love to be proven wrong and we have a very real competitor to the big boys!

The Raspberry Pi people have made it clear that they want the initial batches of the boards in the hands of developers first and foremost.
Guess what ? thats where 90% (i imagine!) of them are ending up at the moment. I have hopes that sort of saturation there will be a substantial amount
of software appearing in the coming months. I also imagine that there is a ton of open source education software out there that will not be too much
trouble to compile for ARM. There are also distro's like Edubuntu which are prime candidates for porting !

I have a much more optimistic view about things and i really hope this turns out to be a success!

As with any new computer or games console - no point in putting them in the hands of consumers until there is a good software library to boot!

I think this is key ... in fact its in exactly these sectors where linux based operating systems are really taking hold - and for this reason i dont care about Linux on the desktop any more. More people are using linux in some form or another than ever before.

This is true,

But Slashdot is one of the few places I can go on the internet to find comments that are intelligent and well thought out, and where its just as fun reading the comments as the posted article.

Compare the comments on Slashdot to comments on Digg or Youtube for example.

I dont necessarily agree with Google out right. Slashdot is a much valued site for me. The site does have flaws , dont get me wrong! However its the community that makes it a worthwhile and Slashdot has that in droves!
