Submission + - Western Digital Touts New "Green Drives" (computerworld.com)

Lucas123 writes: "Western Digital today announced the availability of a new line of serial ATA drives that are supposed to use 4 to 5 watts less than other competitive drives from Hitachi GST, Fujitsu and Seagate. The new "GreenPower" line comes in 500GB, 750GB and 1TB capacities. Western Digital says it achieves better power performance by balancing the platter's spin speed in order to make it more efficient, by optimizing seek speeds and by parking the read heads when the disk is idle, according to a Computerworld story."

Submission + - To Err Is Human, To Plan Is Divine (informationweek.com)

Anonymous Coward writes: "The term "business continuity" today conjures images as varied as flooded data centers, cascading power outages, and waves of cyber attacks. But the real reason to plan ahead for a business disruption is likely to be much more mundane: Some well-intentioned system administrator makes an ill-advised change to a server in your data center causing all hell to break loose."

Submission + - Baby monitor receives broadcast from space! (theglobeandmail.com)

Raver32 writes: "Young parents Tom and Natalie Meilinger, of Palatine, Ill., a northwest Chicago suburb, may have thought they'd entered the Twilight Zone when, earlier this week, they glanced at the baby monitor that normally shows pictures of their son's crib and instead saw ... astronauts. Aware that 3½-month-old Jack wasn't yet walking, let alone walking in space, they knew almost immediately what they were seeing. (Natalie, after all, is a science teacher.) The images were of astronauts gliding weightlessly through the cabin of the space shuttle Atlantis, about 100 kilometres above Earth."

Web 2.0 Threats and Risks for Financial Services 56

An anonymous reader writes "Companies are tuning into Web 2.0 but are simultaneously exposing their systems to next generation threats such as Cross site Scripting, Cross Site Request Forgery and Application interconnection issues due to SOA. With regard to security, two dimensions are very critical for financial systems — Identity and Data privacy. Adopting the Web 2.0 framework may involve risks and threats against these two dimensions along with other security concerns. Ajax, Flash (RIA) and Web Services deployment is critical for Web 2.0 applications. Financial services are putting these technologies in place; most without adequate threat assessment exercises."

Submission + - SEO hits new low

BofhSEO writes: You've heard of blackhat SEO. Here comes coffin SEO. Newspaper and other sites are now advertising on Google whenever a major tragedy strikes. Weird how people do things on the net they'd never do in the real world. Would a newspaper advertise its Virginia shooting coverage on a billboard?

sfxdude writes: "Two people in Worcestershire, UK, have been arrested and cautioned for using someone's wi-fi without permission. The men were cautioned for 'dishonestly obtaining electronic communications services with intent to avoid payment'. They had attracted attention by putting cardboard up over the window of the car they were using, but the light from the laptop could still be seen and so residents contacted the police."
