Interesting. Next time my mother wines about the computer perhaps I should take a ubuntu live cd over to her place and show her around... I've tried this many times but I think I have to simplify ubuntu further to get her to not nod it down as too complicated, like for instance removing the multiple desktops which are ace when you know how, but just "where did my window go?" for beginners...

I made sure she ran firefox and her mail is web based plus she mostly uses the computer to manage photos.. perhaps you have a good solution for that? I'm currently running digikam but that's almost to complex.. perhaps I could use dropbox for galleries..

I'm an avid linux user, but I'm yet to push it onto my family or friends because they have other needs than me. As parent said, windows compability is key for those people.

Tho, it should be said that with the new webgl to html5 there will be a LOT of change I think, regarding to games. If you can play a game safe in your browser, why use seperate executables? I think this is a whole new era, so devs: get your webgl skills up to date ASAP!

I also want to add that not all users wants to connect to the internet - at all.

I bought the ps3 so that I could try linux on it and to play single player games. In my book that's where I get relaxation, I just get more stressed when playing against others (and in some cases against time). That's why I loved the game skate for instance. No pressure, just cruising around for a few hours etc. I don't need to be "social" in the ps3 - in fact I don't need to be social at all when using a computer. That's why off line mode is important to me.

Actually I got bored with the ps3 and the lack of games that I sold it and got back to using the ps2 which is a fucking great console also. The guy that bought the ps3 was happy that I hadn't even connected it to the internet once. Sure, I might have lost some of the magic with the console from updates and trials etc, but I didn't feel that was important to me.

I feel the future consoles isn't going to offer as much to me as the previous ones did. Call me old, after all, I'm half way to retirement ;-)

When you watch people crashing into world trade centers, you expect people to die. When people get down into fighter jets, you know something could happen. When you're watching sports, or taking a part in it, you're not expecting anyone to die. Especially not that sudden. Yeah, it was a horrible crash.

Yep, and I click the chekbox to enable the ads again to still support the site, and I would think it would be alright with an ad at the bottom or top of every page on wikipedia too.. it's not like it wil be less awful than the one with wales, and I don't see how that would be a worse thing than the companies editing the pages "anonymously" anyway.

The New Reality of Gaming 122

Hugh Pickens writes "Video games used to be about fighting aliens and rescuing princesses, writes Rohin Dharmakumar in Forbes, but the most popular games today have you tilling your farm, hiring waiting staff and devising menus for your restaurant or taking your pets out for walks while maintaining cordial relations with the neighbors. 'Reality, it would seem, is the new escapism.' Video games of the pre-social network era were mostly played by boys or young men but 'now the core audience of social network games are girls and young women,' says Alok Kejriwal, founder and CEO of games2win, an online gaming company. The tipping point in the US came in 2008 when women outnumbered men on the Internet. Combined with millions of parents and grandparents who're new to the Internet, the traditional face of the gamer is changing from that of a 25-year-old male to a band stretching from 16 to 40 years comprising men and women in almost equal numbers, says Sebastien de Halleux, one of the co-founders of Playfish, who predicts that someone is going to create a social game very shortly that pulls in a billion dollars a year. Gaming for this new set of players is less about breathtaking graphics, pulsating sound or edge-of-the-seat action and more about strengthening existing real world relations through frequent casual gaming. 'Think of these games as a sandbox where everybody has the same tools, yet everyone achieves different results,' says de Halleux."

Also, I think you could extend the lego playground to use spaghetti and glue to build bridges and see if they support the load of the lego cars perhaps. Simple and easy and don't requite much funds to try out...Paper mache etc could also be a nice treat.. make masks off eachother or something to make it more fun.

The lack of a good career mode in GT3/GT4 is something that is really missing from the series... IMO the career mode was even better in GT3 than GT4... you should start out as a racing rookie and build your career. Learning how to adjust all the settings to your driving style etc. GT3 made that good, but then they just seemed to focus on the racing sim bit in GT4.

I might be mistaken but I felt that GT3 was a more fun game than GT4, but perhaps my expectations just was too high. Which brings us to GT5. It has to perform _really_ great to live up to the expectations after that long of a wait. The PS3 is already dead to me. I waited for GT5, I got bored in the meantime and sold the console.

Gran Turismo 5 To Be Released November 24th 110

UgLyPuNk writes "After many, many delays, Gran Turismo 5 has finally gotten a solid release date: November 24th. ('Tis the season for vaporware titles to emerge into the real world, it seems.)" Eurogamer posted a preview of the game back in August, saying, "It's been a whirlwind of features and car chatter, beneath which the game still looks fantastic. It may have been in development for the whole of this console generation, but the technical arms race has slowed down and GT5 still looks as good as any other racing game we've seen, and it is, to say the least, comprehensive." Joystiq has a video of the course maker and a collection of screenshots.
