Submission + - Google One of Many Victims in SSL Certificate Hack (computerworld.com)

JohnBert writes: "A Dutch company that issues digital certificates used to authenticate websites said that several dozen other websites in addition to Google have been affected by a security breach.

The company, DigiNotar, issues SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and EVSSL (Extended Validation) certificates, which are validated by Web browsers to ensure people are not visiting a fake website that is trying to appear legitimate.

DigiNotar is what's called a Certificate Authority (CA), an entity that sells digital certificates to legitimate website owners. But DigiNotar issued a digital certificate for the google.com domain, a mistake that could allow a skilled attacker to intercept someone's e-mail."

Don't get your undies in a bundle Sally. I wasn't referring to this particular subject at all. The poster implied that the only reason he doesn't use Linux is because of people like the original poster (also somewhat implying that he accepts that Linux is superior). My example was that if there is a superior product, if you would choose not to use it because of the users of the product, that would make you an imbecile. My last comment was to point out that there are idiots among all operating systems therefore one should not judge the OS by it's user base. So, count to 10, take some Pamprin and have a little lie-down.

Thank you for demonstrating how exactly this is bigoted. Sure there are plenty of reasons to mistrust and fear Catholics. However you are incorrect on the definition of bigotry. It's a preconceived notion imposed on one person based on the actions or beliefs relating to some aspect of that person. As you explained, some people see news stories of violent inner city black people and thereby fear all black people or hate them or whatever. Using an individual instance to paint a person or group of people as something rather than judging the individual. He implied the Pope was a child molester. Granted he did so in humor, I understand that, but it's maddening to see the acceptable threshold of bigotry both humorous and otherwise toward Catholics. And that's okay. If there was an article about a homosexual and someone said "I bet he has AIDS" there would be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth. Play fair. You want to decry being bigoted and predjudicial, then don't do it your damn self. (I fully understand that Catholics and Christians in general are some of THE most prejudicial and bigoted people out there... but regardless that doesn't permit one to be bigoted against THEM.... unless you don't mind being a hypocrite)

Submission + - Do nuclear weapons really deter? (wordpress.com)

Martin Hellman writes: "In my Stanford seminar, “Nuclear Weapons, Risk and Hope,” I argue that much of the risk stems from a lack of critical thinking – accepting conventional wisdom on key points of national security, even when it is wrong. Much of the hope therefore lies in applying critical thinking to root out fallacious assumptions that form the foundation for our world view. One key assumption that deserves greater attention: Do nuclear weapons act as a deterrent? And, if so, what do they deter?"
