Comment China got more elecric cars than everyone combined (Score 2, Interesting) 102

Last year Chinese people bought more electric and hybrid cars than the rest of the world put together. They have the worlds largest renewable projects and are pushing the envelope there. Yes, they pollute but they also have a lot of industry which is understandable. That takes longer to fix. They are working on that since China suffers a lot from the pollution.

India is working on the worlds cheapest electric car and trying to move away from fossil fuels but India is a slower country. Once economics become viable India will move quickly. I'm more worried about the USA. They are the "virtue signaling" for the rest of the world. Everyone copies what happens there. If the USA flips to renewables hard then everyone will copy. It will also make the economics even more compelling thanks to economics of scale.

No wonder they're talking about Rust. It's an easy target as it's super complex and not exactly a direct alternative to C++.

But Zig is already there and doing the work.

Also the whole thing where a guy at Google presents something and the press makes it out to be as if "Google" came up with it is ludicrous. Google is a mess. Until they don't announce it on the main stage at IO it isn't something that they're doing and even then... Not 100%.

Not exactly. This is github. He used their platform and the reliance of other projects to perform intentional digital sabotage.
I wouldn't be surprised if you can prosecute him for sabotage under some laws.

E.g. if I install a bear trap on the road to my house on my property and you get your foot in it... It's totally my fault. Not yours.

He can still download his code. He still has copyright and rights to it. But since he published them under permissive license github can now do whatever it wants. I'm not advocating for this on a regular basis but this is a clear case where they would be correct to do that.

I posted this quote to twitter without context from https://blog.mollywhite.net/its-not-still-the-early-days/
Everyone knew it's crypto. If I just say it's a ponzi scheme without mentioning crypto everyone knows what I'm talking about.
The core idea was interesting, government free currency. But the implementation turned out to be wasteful and failed in the market. It got taken over by "investors" who are running a "pump and dump" process.

Now I know you guys know a specific currency that doesn't have those problems. But right now bitcoin killed any chance for it.

Comment Re:"valid", sure. A legally protected class? No (Score 2) 358

That's a fair point. I'm not a lawyer. I think there's a nuance here similar to the one we have for speech (yelling fire in a crowded theater). I think this specific protest for this specific company isn't grounds for dismissal.

If an Oracle employee made that protest then, well... You know where you signed up to work...

Comment Re:What about their company motto? (Score 1, Insightful) 358

This is loyalty to the company... That's where we disagree. As a company owner I want my employees to tell me if I went too far. I think an employee that goes all the way like that is far more valuable than a "drone" that just toes the company line. These are the people that believe in the company.

Whether this is a right... Google is a HUGE advocate of free speech above all. They will have a very hard time defending this in court.

If I do something illegal they have protection by law. Those are whistleblower laws.

Comment What about their company motto? (Score 2, Insightful) 358

I don't agree. Say your company worked for Epstein (before he didn't kill himself), I think it's valid to protest that. Working for the Taliban?

Yes, you can quit and lose benefits, medical etc. That's not exactly a good option. Yes, there should be limits on anything but employees don't protest reasonable things. They protest outlier events like that.

Also this is Google. "Don't be evil" is a joke for most of us, but for the guys inside... They actually believe that nonsense. I think these are the people who care most about Google and believe in it most of all. The fact that Google would fire them and then go to court with an excuse like this pretty much proves that Google is indeed pretty evil and doesn't deserve conscientious workers who believe in its mission.

Social networks stole democracy and gave trump the presidency which he shouldn't have had. His cohorts are still manipulating the narrative without him.

In fact, being off twitter has been a huge boost for Trump. People forgot some of the crazy... Keep in mind, they only kicked him off after he tried to have his VP hanged by an angry mob and start an insurrection. As bad as those guys are (and they are bad) Trump is way worse.

Submission + - Can WORA Be Better Than Native?

digiti writes: Shai Almog (who Slashdot mentioned before) has posted a manifesto to the O'Reilly programmers blog where he suggest that the mantra of "native is best" isn't always true. As a vendor of a WORA (Write Once Run Anywhere) tool he is obviously biased but does he have a point?
