Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Coding boot camps for PHBs (slashdot.org)

MrMarket writes: I am a PHB (marketing guy) with a hobbyist-level understanding of HTML and CSS that would like to learn how to build a web application. My employer has a sabbatical program that gives us six weeks paid leave to pursue an intensive area of study. I would like to use mine to build a basic consumer web application as a way to get learn HTML5, CSS, and javascript.

Can any one suggest a coder's bootcamp for people with little to no experience? Ideally it would be a program where I could come into the program with my idea (with detailed mock ups and business requirements) and have access to classes and labs sessions to choose the framework, set up the environment, and build the application with the help of a teacher. I know that most of you learned to code by "just doing it," but I could really benefit from some structure and mentoring to accelerate the process (or at least get a jump start on the foundation).

Submission + - Forget LED lightbulbs... ESL bulbs are coming... (usatoday.com)

Bibs_kin writes: USA Today has an article mentioning a new lightbulb technology that should start receiving orders by the end of the year. Still trying to get used to the curly-Q compact fluorescent light bulb? Haven't yet tried the LED (light emitting diode)? Well, you may be falling behind, because there's yet another, energy-efficient light bulb entering the market — known as the ESL.

Submission + - Does Towing an Electric Car Recharger Make Sense? (allcarselectric.com)

thecarchik writes: If you listen to the ad executives trying to sell the 2011 Chevrolet Volt there’s one big problem with electric cars: they don’t go as far on a charge as a gas car can on a tank of fuel.
While it’s true that electric cars like the 2011 Nissan Leaf and 2011 Coda Sedan may provide more than enough range per charge for the majority of users we do get asked time and time again what happens when you need to go further? Enter the unimaginatively named Electric Motors and Vehicles Company (EMAV) with its two-along Power Regeneration Unit (PRU). Looking a little like a shrunken camping trailer, the PRU holds a 70 kilowatt-hour battery pack along with a small gasoline-powered generator. Theoretically, this could extend the range of cars like the 2011 Nissan Leaf by several hundred miles.

Submission + - Kidnapping, Theft and Rape Are Not "Cyber" Crimes (circleid.com) 1

netzar writes: CAUSE executive director, Neil Schwartzman, in a post on CircleID urges governments and law enforcement to treat cyber crime as what it really is: 'crime': "When someone is mugged, harassed, kidnapped or raped on a sidewalk, we don't call it 'sidewalk crime' and call for new laws to regulate sidewalks. It is crime, and those who commit crimes are subject to the full force of the law. For too long, people have referred to spam in dismissive terms: just hit delete, some say, or let the filters take care of it. Others — most of us, in fact — refer to phishing, which is the first step in theft of real money from real people and institutions, as 'cyber crime.' It's time for that to stop. ... This isn't just email. This isn't a war. This isn't "cyber." This is crime.

Submission + - Lung cancer hospital Thailand (health-tourism.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Depending on the stage of the disease, and the location and size of the tumor, you may be a candidate for lung cancer surgery. There are a few approaches and each is based on the growth of the abnormal mass.

If the tumor has not yet spread past a small portion of your lung, a surgeon can perform a wedge resection to remove it. If the mass has grown, but remains within a single lobe, a lobectomy can be performed. In the event that cancerous cells spread throughout the affected lung, yet have not metastasized beyond it, a surgeon may be able to do a pneumonectomy.

Submission + - Microsoft Touts UI Efficiency With WP7 (computerworld.com)

CWmike writes: Microsoft claims its Windows Phone 7 smartphones help users get more done in fewer steps than do rival phones. Microsoft based its claim of greater efficiency — that WP7 requires up to 20% fewer steps to perform common tasks — on its own internal research comparing tasks among smartphone users, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday. The claim was offered to Computerworld as a partial explanation of how WP7 phones fulfill Microsoft's 'Really' TV ad claim that the phones are 'designed to get you in and out and back to life.' On analyst questioned the ads, saying that the message is inconsistent with what most people really want from their smartphones.'Most users who buy smartphones spend more time searching apps and other things," Jack Gold said. 'Most phone manufacturers want to suck you in and keep you on the phone a lot. At least the carriers do.'

Submission + - W3C tests HTML5 browser compatibility, crowns IE9 (engadget.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The World Wide Web Consortium — you know, the team responsible for certifying and standardizing HTML5 — has put together its first table of official conformance test results. The data show Internet Explorer 9 as the most adroit performer (again), though Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari don't seem to be too far behind in their HTML5 compliance, either. Of course, these checks don't cover the entire spec, which in itself isn't even finalized yet, but they provide us with a glimpse into a brave new world where Microsoft actually cares about coders keen on maximizing interoperability by adhering to web-wide standards

Submission + - Supreme Court Leaning Towards Game Industry (industrygamers.com)

donniebaseball23 writes: Oral arguments concerning the hotly contested California violent video games law began today, and so far it appears that the Supreme Court Justices are siding with the game industry's view that the law is unconstitutional. In fact, Justice Antonin Scalia said that California is "asking us to create a whole new prohibition." Kenneth L. Doroshow, general counsel of the ESA noted that the law "would inevitably lead to a stifling of creative expression across all forms of media, not limited to video games." Furthermore, a new U.S. Gallup poll shows that the majority of Americans want to see parents as being most responsible for what violent content kids can or cannot access.
