Comment Re:The New Tardis (Score 1) 379

I'll admit that I was hoping for the white roundels and a traditional console. Given that the TARDIS did a reboot, I don't know why it had to be so primitive looking. But then something hit me about it.

Having all the analog devices controlling this marvel had a neat feel to it. Kinda like a retro style, like someone that hooks a C-64 up to act as a serial terminal on a high-end Sun box - just because they could.

The other thing that I liked about it was they didn't try to be all futuristic. Look at the Star Trek ToS, or TNG. Look at the older console rooms, especially in the late Tom Baker era. All of those tried to predict the future and to add touches that had that far out feel to it. And now that we have moved forward a bit, it all looks so silly and dated.

By having a typewriter, you at least start out dated and it help it stand up in the future, plus it has the kinda eccentric feel that the wooden console room of the Baker era had as well. Reducing some of the clutter would be nice however.

I just hope we get to see more of the interior (and it doesn't look like backlot stairwells!)

Man Fined $1.5 Million For Leaked Mario Game 287

An anonymous reader writes "A Queensland man will have to pay Nintendo $1.5 million in damages after illegally copying and uploading one of its recent games to the internet ahead of its release, the gaming giant says. Nintendo said the loss was caused when James Burt made New Super Mario Bros Wii available for illegal download a week ahead of its official Australian release in November of last year. Nintendo applied for and was granted a search order by the Federal Court, forcing Burt to disclose the whereabouts of all his computers, disks and electronic storage devices in November. He was also ordered to allow access, including passwords, to his social networking sites, email accounts and websites."

Submission + - Affordable and usable video conferencing 1

Sabalon writes: I work at a state university with remote sites, minimal space, and all the other usual bits. We used to have some dedicated circuit video conferencing but those have fallen into disuse. The administration is now interested in being able to stream a class from site to site, or at least have a student at one site have visual interaction with a person at another site. It seems to me that many of the players (Tanberg for instance) may have good products, but are designed to be stand-alone room devices with many options and simple controls. My thought is that if Skype, uStream and others can do live video, there has to be somethings out there that don't cost a fortune but work effectively. Key things would be the ability to use commodity web cams as a source, viewable on a PC (preferably all the main OS's) and the ability to add in other devices (say H.323 encoders) or desktop/application sharing. Are there decent products and solutions out there for us mere mortals?

Police Called Over 11-Year-Old's Science Project 687

garg0yle writes "Police in San Diego were called to investigate an 11-year-old's science project, consisting of 'a motion detector made out of an empty Gatorade bottle and some electronics,' after the vice-principal came to the conclusion that it was a bomb. Charges aren't being laid against the youth, but it's being recommended that he and his family 'get counseling.' Apparently, the student violated school policies — I'm assuming these are policies against having any kind of independent thought?"

Duke Nukem Forever Not Dead? (Yes, This Again) 195

kaychoro writes "There may be hope for Duke Nukem Forever (again). 'Jon St. John, better known as the voice of Duke Nukem, said some interesting words during a panel discussion at the Music and Games Festival (MAGFest) that took place January 1 – 4 in Alexandria, Virginia, according to Pixel Enemy. Answering a question from the crowd regarding DNF, St. John said: "... let me go ahead and tell you right now that I'm not allowed to talk about Duke Nukem Forever. No, no, don't be disappointed, read between the lines — why am I not allowed to talk about it?"'"

Blizzard Authenticators May Become Mandatory 248

An anonymous reader writes "WoW.com is reporting that a trusted source has informed them that Blizzard is giving serious consideration to making authenticators mandatory on all World of Warcraft accounts. The authenticators function the same as ones provided by most banks — in order to log in, you must generate a number on the external device. Blizzard already provides a free iPhone app that functions as an authenticator. The source stated, 'it is a virtually forgone conclusion that it will happen.' This comes after large spates of compromised accounts left Bizzard game masters severely backlogged by restoration requests."

Doom-Like Video Surveillance For Ports In Development 56

oranghutan writes "A research and development group down under is working to develop an advanced video surveillance system for ports around the world that uses video superimposed onto a 3D map. With 16-megapixel high-definition cameras on a distributed (cabled) network and a proprietary system written in a variety of languages (C++, Python, SQL, etc.), the group from NICTA is aiming to allow security teams at the Port of Brisbane — which is 110km long — to monitor shipping movements, cargo and people. By scrolling along a 3D map, the security teams can click on a location and then get a real-time video feed superimposed onto the map. Authorities from around the world with the right permissions can then access the same system. The main difference from regular surveillance systems is the ability to switch views without having to know camera numbers/locations and the one screen view."

Comment Lets make it a Hercules/Xena reunion (Score 1) 298

Like someone said - Bruce will most likely have some role if you get him out of Miami for a bit. But really with Herc/Xena under his belt, this should be old hat for Sam. Just a matter of making the right phone calls to get all the old people back together in some new roles (cameos or main) (RIP Kevin Smith :(

Ted Raimi as Topper McNabb
Lucy Lawless as Jana Proudmore
Renee O'Connor as the head chick in Darnassus
Hudson Leick as human female character in just their underwear
etc...

I wonder how many reviews will compare it to LotR - Orcs vs Men, albeit with the Orcs being more of a proper character instead of just generic bad guys.
