Comment Three and Two (Score 1) 599

If you have a large number of small objects to count spread out on a table, shift three in one hand and two in the other. Every second 'touch' is ten. This all can go very fast. The key is fingers can accurately grab groups of two and three without a tiny pause of awareness, more than three the mind needs to conceptualize a number however slightly.

There is a free email option. It requires a HAM license (note: morse code is not required anymore) and a SSB transmiter and a hundred foot antenna. A good SSB unit is around a thousand bucks.

It is only for text based non-commercial emails but functions anywhere (under most weather conditions).

Doesn't sound like a solution for a students desire to surf the web for free anywhere/anytime but email is available and pervasive just about anywhere.

Submission + - Fungi Make Biodiesel at Room Temperature

SoyChemist writes: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology have used pellets made from the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae to produce biodiesel at room temperature. Usually, biodiesel is made by brewing vegetable oil with methanol and lye at high temperatures. That wastes a lot of energy, and thus partially defeats the point of making an alternative fuel. The researchers in Hyderabad mixed sunflower oil with methanol and trickled it through a glass column filled with fungus pellets. A lipase enzyme in the fungus converted the brew into biodiesel with a yield as high as 85 percent. Considering that the U.S. Department of Energy and BP are have pumped tons of money into synthetic biology for making alternative fuels, it is amazing to see what an apparently underfunded lab can do with natural organisms.

Submission + - Paramount rejects Blu-ray, adopts HD DVD

Bdazed writes: After more than a year of testing both formats, Paramount Pictures has picked HD DVD as its format of choice, abandoning Blu-ray despite having released more than 20 Blu-ray movies in the last year. Paramount says HD DVD is cheaper and more suited for the market. The fact that HD DVD is getting new support despite being in second place underscores how unsettled the market is.
