"your full of crap" - always nice to bring the big guns to a moderate discussion

As for Android vs iOS, I know both and I like the dev platform (Xcode) iOS is full of quirky stuff such as weird macros whose function is not clear at first glance or manual memory management. Android is Java, while it might be quite verbose sometimes it is simpler as a language and easier to learn that Objective C

As for HTML5/CSS3/Javascript well that's the revolution that we've all seem to be expecting for a few years now and I've yet to see the promised full blow, 3d native looking, responsive apps.
It might be the common denominator but it is still far away in terms of features AND development environment from the native platforms.

As a developer:
- Android is way easier than iOS.
- ActionScript is the place when good language design went to die

As a user
- iOS apps, if designed natively, are extremely hard to beat in terms of responsiveness, beauty and general "native feeling"

As a vendor
- Flash is the common denominator, i.e., it may commoditize the platform, but I've yet to see a flash based app that looks as good as the best native apps
- Android will have a bigger user base but a worse monetization mechanism than iOS, i.e., more users but which consume less (more due to the neglect of the market than otherwise).

Submission + - Is Google Giving up on Nexus One? (daniweb.com)

rsmiller510 writes: In a surprising move today, Google chose to feature the HTC Droid Incredible instead of its own Nexus One on Verizon. Could it be a sign, they are backing off from their branded phone?

Woman Tells State Judiciary Committee, "DoD Implanted A Microchip Inside Me" 222

The Georgia House Judiciary Committee took up a bill that would "prohibit requiring a person to be implanted with a microchip," and would make violating the ban a misdemeanor. Things started to get weird at the hearing when a woman who described herself as a resident of DeKalb County told the committee, "I'm also one of the people in Georgia who has a microchip." Not sure of what she was trying to say, she was allowed to continue and added, "Microchips are like little beepers. Just imagine, if you will, having a beeper in your rectum or genital area, the most sensitive area of your body. And your beeper numbers displayed on billboards throughout the city. All done without your permission." Further prodding revealed that the woman's co-workers would torture her by activating the chips with their cell phones and that the chips were implanted by "researchers with the federal government." The committee thanked the woman for her input, and later approved the bill.
It's funny. Laugh.

True Tales of Tech Hoarding 268

Recently some member of my household forced me to watch several episodes of A&E's Hoarders. This led to several *ahem* discussions about hoarding tendencies and the closet of cables, wires, boxes and parts in my basement. But I'm not doing bad compared to some of these tech hoarders. My favorite is the guy using a stack of 9 VA rack machines as an end table.

Very true.

People seem to think of China as this troublesome country that does whatever it wants and that nothing can be done about it. This is simply not true.

China is actually more dependent on US and EU than the other way around. They devote most resources to the production of products that need to be mandatorily exported as the the chinese masses cannot afford them.

Corporations and states seem to ignore the blatant anti-freemarket and anti-freedom-speech-policies because of the el-dorado of the 2 bilion people market. WAKE UP. Chinese policy will never allow for free market, and will always be biased towards chinese products.

To add insult to injury, in EU, chinese imports SIMPLY PAY NO TAXES, sinking the local producers in the process.

So what can be done? Well western states can stop acting like slaves to their chinese overlords.

Considering Cheaper Pico-Projectors As Standard Equipment On Cell Phones 146

An anonymous reader writes "Will pico-projectors become standard equipment on mobile phones, the same way that digital cameras have become? The jury is still out on user acceptance — after all, only four mobile phones use pico-projectors today — but if they get small and cheap enough, mobile phone makers are going to install them. There are four vendors today — Microvision, National Semiconductor, 3M and Texas Instruments — but only TI has design wins in cell phones already on the market. And at the recent Mobile World Congress, TI showed a smaller digital light processor (DLP) chip that fits inside even the slimmest mobile phones, and which it claims is cheap enough to become standard equipment. A lot of us never use the camera in our phones now — would you use a pico-projector if it was built into your phone?"

2010 — the Year AACS and HDMI Kill Off HD Component Video 424

For home theater buffs who want (or already have) a high-def system using component-video connections, time may be growing short. Audiofan writes with this story, which begins: "Digital HD (high definition), like that enabled through HDMI and Blu-ray, is awesome. It offers amazing picture and audio quality. It allows you to conveniently connect one single cable to provide both picture and sound. It is royally going to screw up a lot of homes next year. Wait, what was that last part? After December 31, 2010, manufacturers will not be 'allowed' [to] introduce new hardware with component video outputs supplying more than an SD resolution (480i or 576i). Should this go through as planned, it's going to disable or throw a wrench in a lot of existing custom installations as soon as the end of this year." The AACS in the headline stands for Advanced Access Content System, the industry scheme to block "the analog hole" by controlling content from storage media to eyeballs.

How To Play Poker With Your Rock Band Guitar 121

An anonymous reader writes 'Sean Lind over at PokerListings has written a really interesting piece on how to configure Rock Band (or Guitar Hero) instruments to use them as controllers for playing online poker. The instructions given in his how-to could really be used to configure the instruments for any game.' Or how about a genuine chording keyboard?
