CIQ, Oracle and SUSE today announced their intent to form the Open Enterprise Linux Association (OpenELA), a collaborative trade association to encourage the development of distributions compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) by providing open and free Enterprise Linux (EL) source code.

The formation of OpenELA arises from Red Hat’s recent changes to RHEL source code availability. In response, CIQ, Oracle and SUSE are collaborating to deliver source code, tools and systems through OpenELA for the community.

It's a fair cop :-). I've only started FIPS work in earnest since I got laid-off from Google and joined CIQ, so I'm not cognizant of all the correct terms.

Yeah, it's important for customers though.

No, you can't downgrade SMB3.1.1 to any lower protocol with a MITM attack. That was one of the fixes in SMB3.1.1.

SMB3 can't be downgraded or compromised by dictionary attack.

SMB3 actually *is* safer, due to the cryptographic protection meaning you can't MITM downgrade it.

No, Synology and QNAP are active bug reporters to the Samba project. I fix bugs for them both on a regular basis. Funnily enough, the Apple client engineers are also very active Samba bug reporters :-).

Jeremy Allison - Sam writes: "ksmbd" is a new Linux kernel module which implements an SMB server. It's aimed at being low overhead, low footprint, performant fileserver covering many basic use-cases.

ksmbd claims performance improvements on a wide range of benchmarks: the graphs on this page show a doubling of performance on some tests.

Clearly, those number are impressive, but at the same time recent improvements in Samba's IO performance put this into perspective: by leveraging the new "io_uring" Linux API Samba is able to provide roughly 10x the throughput compared to ksmbd.
