NASA's Space Balloon Smashes Car In Australia 174

Humunculus writes "Of more worldly issues, NASA's latest multimillion-dollar stratosphere-bound balloon launch has gone horribly wrong and crashed into a car, turning it over and narrowly missing two elderly people who were observing the launch. The payload fared worse, reportedly being smashed into a 'thousand pieces.'"

Submission + - HP Takes on iPad With Slate Tablet (computerworld.com)

CWmike writes: HP this week started leaking information about its upcoming $550 Windows 7 tablet computer, the Slate, apparently hoping to take advantage of the hype and buzz surrounding Apple's release of the iPad on Saturday. Revealed at CES, the company has since released short blog updates about the HP Slate and posted videos about it on YouTube. Now, less than a week after the iPad became available, HP yesterday leaked information about the pricing and specs of its tablet to tech blog Engadget, which reports that the Slate is equipped with 1.6-GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, has an 8.9-in. 1024-by-600 capacitive touch-screen display. The high-end and low-end models both have a five-hour battery, and an SDHC slot, a USB port, a SIM card slot for an optional 3G modem and a dock connector. Analyst Dan Olds said HP's device looks to be a strong machine, but said it will have stiff competition out of the box, since the iPad hype is likely to continue. 'On the face of it, HP's Slate might be a better machine for people who aren't already fully vested in the Apple ecosystem,' said Olds. 'HP's device runs Windows 7, so it can run software that people already know and have. It looks like it can multitask — something the iPad can't do. And it has the ability to easily connect to other devices like printers and cameras — another place where the iPad comes up short.' The deal killer, however, may be batterly life, other analysts note. iPad has been noted for achieving 12 hours by some reviewers.

Scientists Discover Booze That Won't Give You a Hangover 334

Kwang-il Kwon and Hye Gwang Jeong of Chungnam National University have discovered that drinking alcohol with oxygen bubbles added leads to fewer hangovers and a shorter sobering up time. People drinking the bubbly booze sobered up 20-30 minutes faster and had less severe and fewer hangovers than people who drank the non-fizzy stuff. Kwon said: "The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage reduces plasma alcohol concentrations faster than a normal dissolved-oxygen alcohol beverage does. This could provide both clinical and real-life significance. The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage would allow individuals to become sober faster, and reduce the side effects of acetaldehyde without a significant difference in alcohol's effects. Furthermore, the reduced time to a lower BAC may reduce alcohol-related accidents."

Living In Tokyo's Capsule Hotels 269

afabbro writes "Capsule Hotel Shinjuku 510 once offered a night’s refuge to salarymen who had missed the last train home. Now with Japan enduring its worst recession since World War II, it is becoming an affordable option for people with nowhere else to go. The Hotel 510’s capsules are only 6 1/2 feet long by 5 feet wide. Guests must keep possessions, like shirts and shaving cream, in lockers outside of the capsules. Atsushi Nakanishi, jobless since Christmas says, 'It’s just a place to crawl into and sleep. You get used to it.'”

The Best Robots of 2009 51

kkleiner writes "Singularity Hub has just unveiled its second annual roundup of the best robots of the year. In 2009 robots continued their advance towards world domination with several impressive breakouts in areas such as walking, automation, and agility, while still lacking in adaptability and reasoning ability. It will be several years until robots can gain the artificial intelligence that will truly make them remarkable, but in the meantime they are still pretty awesome."

The Perfect Way To Slice a Pizza 282

iamapizza writes "New Scientist reports on the quest of two math boffins for the perfect way to slice a pizza. It's an interesting and in-depth article; 'The problem that bothered them was this. Suppose the harried waiter cuts the pizza off-center, but with all the edge-to-edge cuts crossing at a single point, and with the same angle between adjacent cuts. The off-center cuts mean the slices will not all be the same size, so if two people take turns to take neighboring slices, will they get equal shares by the time they have gone right round the pizza — and if not, who will get more?' This is useful, of course, if you're familiar with the concept of 'sharing' a pizza."

EA Shuts Down Pandemic Studios, Cuts 200 Jobs 161

lbalbalba writes "Electronic Arts is shutting down its Westwood-based game developer Pandemic Studios just two years after acquiring it, putting nearly 200 people out of work. 'The struggling video game publisher informed employees Tuesday morning that it was closing the studio as part of a recently announced plan to eliminate 1,500 jobs, or 16% of its global workforce. Pandemic has about 220 employees, but an EA spokesman said that a core team, estimated by two people close to the studio to be about 25, will be integrated into the publisher's other Los Angeles studio, in Playa Vista.' An ex-developer for Pandemic attributed the studio's struggles to poor decisions from the management."

Games Fail To Portray Gender and Ethnic Diversity 590

eldavojohn writes "A new study has found that game characters tend not to reflect cultural diversity. According to the paper from researchers across four universities (PDF): 'A large-scale content analysis of characters in video games was employed to answer questions about their representations of gender, race and age in comparison to the US population. The sample included 150 games from a year across nine platforms, with the results weighted according to game sales. ... The results show a systematic over-representation of males, white and adults and a systematic under-representation of females, Hispanics, Native Americans, children and the elderly.' The researchers also note that games 'function as crucial gatekeepers for interest in science, technology, engineering and math,' and that without these groups represented properly, 'it may place underrepresented groups behind the curve.'"

Comment I wonder about the "eco-friendly" award... (Score 1) 783

Milling a laptop case out of a brick of aluminum produces a lot of waste. The energy required to recycle the aluminum is low compared to the energy used to produce new material. However, after you factor in transporting and handling of the waste to a recycling facility is it still more eco-friendly than case manufacturing processes?

It's just a thought that came to mind while reading the article and I would love to hear what others think.
