Submission + - Linus Torvalds: Linux Is Bigger Than Me! (efytimes.com)

swaparnie writes: "The following from Linus will surely interest you, "I like making strong statements, because I find the discussion interesting. In other words, I actually tend to 'like' arguing. Not mindlessly, but I certainly tend to prefer the discussion a bit more heated and not just entirely platonic. And making strong arguments occasionally ends up resulting in a very valid rebuttal, and then I'll happily say, Oh, ok, you're right.""

Submission + - Adobe may launch Office rival 1

Ulysees writes: Adobe may launch its own office-application suite, taking it into direct competition with Microsoft.

In an interview, Mike Downey, group manager for platform evangelism at Adobe, said that, although he could not reveal any plans at the moment, the possibility should not be dismissed.

"Though we have not yet announced any intentions to move into the office productivity-software market, considering that we have built this platform that makes it easy to build rich applications that run on both the desktop and the browser, I certainly wouldn't rule anything like that out," Downey told Wired.com.

Submission + - Hackers Extract Main Key to iPhone Unlocking (gizmodo.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: After reverse-engineering Nucleus, the iPhone's radio/multimedia chip RTOS, the iPhone Dev Team has achieved the next big milestone to free the iPhone from the AT&T network: they have extracted the full content of the S-Gold2 chip's NOR memory. Bluntly put, these are the plans for the damn Death Star and "is the main key to achieve true unlocking." They are also calling for donations to help them keep their efforts.

Submission + - Sony PS3s to be destroyed? (tech.co.uk)

Suppostrophe writes: "According to Tech.co.uk... The Sony PlayStation 3 's IBM-built Cell processor infringes a 1991 hardware patent and all existing units should be impounded and destroyed. That's according to a complaint filed against Sony which alleges that the PS3 Cell processor infringes US patent number 5,056,000. If the complaint is upheld, Sony could amazingly be forced to destroy all its Cell processors and to redesign the PlayStation 3 from the ground up. Read more..."

Submission + - Automatix Activly Dangerous to Ubuntu

exeme writes: Ubuntu developer Matthew Garrett has recently analysed famed Ubuntu illegal software installer Automatix and found it to be actively dangerous to Ubuntu desktop systems. In a detailed report which only took Garrett a couple of hours he found many serious, show-stopper bugs and concluded that Ubuntu could not officially support Automatix in its current state. Garrett also goes on to say that simple Debian packages could provide all of the functionality of Automatix without any of the problems it exhibits.

linuxbz writes: "Over 140 teams from all over the world will be participating in Software Freedom Day, 15 September 2007 (and it's not too late to join them if you hurry). But the question is this: What can these teams add to their plans to promote free and open source software on that day?"

Submission + - PHP 4 end of life announcement (php.net)

An anonymous reader writes: Today it is exactly three years ago since PHP 5 has been released. In those three years it has seen many improvements over PHP 4. PHP 5 is fast, stable & production-ready and as PHP 6 is on the way, PHP 4 will be discontinued.

The PHP development team hereby announces that support for PHP 4 will continue until the end of this year only. After 2007-12-31 there will be no more releases of PHP 4.4. We will continue to make critical security fixes available on a case-by-case basis until 2008-08-08. Please use the rest of this year to make your application suitable to run on PHP 5.

For documentation on migration for PHP 4 to PHP 5, we would like to point you to our migration guide. There is additional information available in the PHP 5.0 to PHP 5.1 and PHP 5.1 to PHP 5.2 migration guides as well.

Submission + - Should Social networking sites be banned at work

nytrokiss writes: "MySpace and Facebook have quickly become some of the top websites on the internet. Our IT department has recently seen a massive spike in traffic pointed to social networking sites and is debating if we should ban them. IT departments have banned high bandwidth applications like Skype and "Work Reducing/Insecure" applications like AIM . So the big question arises do these sites need to be included in the "Ban" list or not? What does your company do? Do they ban social networking sites or do they let them pass."
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Fiber Backbone

Abe460 writes: I live in the sticks and cannot get broadband by any means other than satellite. If this is my only option then I guess I'm limited. I'm pretty sure I already know the answer, but I must ask. Is there any way to get service from a fiber backbone without going through one of their POP locations. The reason for this question is the almost 2000ft of fiber buried under my property belonging to Wiltel. Even if I was to donate some property to an isp company to put in some kind of switch close enough to serve the area I would consider. Life without broadband is almost too much to handle.

The notebook uses a custom-written Linux operating system, measures roughly 120 x 100 x 30mm (WDH) and weighs only 900g, boots in 15 seconds from its solid-state hard disk. Asus chairman Jonney Shih claimed the 3ePC would be available in all areas of the world, not only developing nations.
