Actually Jesus isn't really that different then a large number of contemporaries.
People have been teaching "wouldn't it be nice if people were nice to each other" and promptly getting killed for it for quite some time before and after him.
Also Hell is a christian concept, being pagan (Gardernarian priesthood) I was never in danger of going to hell for sins as my faith has no sins, just mortal consequences for our actions.
As for the genocides that Christianity committed, if your god is real, and he really does care about all people, despite race creed or weather you believe or not then why did he not stop his own people? either he doesn't exist or doesn't object, the best outcome here is that he's just a dick that wanted to see people suffer.
Actually the first people who used the scientific method were herbalists (read witches) or Alchemist's (read heretics) the first people to call themselves scientists might have been christian but they only could be that by following the trails blazed by pagans.
Sorry mcgrew, but your religion is too young to take credit for single handily making everything cool in this world. I'm not saying mine did either. It took all of us.
Personally I would want to meet the man Jesus (if I could find him, that I think would be the hard part, I can't pass for Roman or Israelite, I've got too much Norse in my blood and people at that time in history were not trusting of outsiders that didn't speak their language) and show him what would be done in his name, all of it, good and bad, then let him decide what he wants to do about it.
