Comment Re:Let's start by assuming that everything is bad (Score 1) 192

Nope, just that current technology isn't green enough. We should refrain from believing that it can support the same level of profligacy with "green" energy without harm. In fact, the false sense of security of green energy might even prompt higher energy consumption that will make things worst.

For lithium batteries: //The secret of longevity in the EV battery is oversizing and only operating in mid-range with plenty of “grace capacity” as spare in the upper and lower bands.//

For wind turbines: //large-scale wind power generation would warm the Continental United States 0.24 degrees Celsius because wind turbines redistribute heat in the atmosphere.//

Nope, things will age. Lithium batteries have a lifespan of 4 to 6 years and not fully tested with a short EV history so far. Perhaps much shorter than estimated. Phone batteries, for example, cannot last for more than 3 years unless limiting CPU use like iPhone, which was a scandal earlier. Solar panels will also age. Further, think about the environmental destruction of covering a large area of land covered by panels. We don't see the impact yet because the installation is still small. Wait till we try to use solar to supply 50% of electricity. By then, adding to the damage, more gigantic lithium batteries will be needed for storage. Also, how about large-scale US wind power that would cause warming that would take roughly a century to offset? Frankly, if you think the above are talking points of oil companies, I can equally say that yours are talking points of the solar panels and wind turbine manufacturers, and lithium miners as well.

The tragedy of commons is over-consumption. Think about the environmental destruction brought by lithium mining, or changes to atmospheric flows with massive wind turbine installations, pollution brought by making solar panels in countries which we have no idea how they manufacture (remember that Montreal Protocol and CFC?). Green energy won't solve the problem unless we cut down profligacy.
