Comment What is the charging rate? (Score 1) 230

So what's the charging rate? If the reasonable max at the moment is 250kW, can we assume this battery will need at least 1mW?

How will the power grid infrastructure deliver such high levels of usage? We should be upgrading our power lines now if we're expecting to support this type of load.

It's nice to live in a civilized country such as the UK, where you either:

A) Don't do a tax return at all, as your income is taxed at source.
B) Can do it simply via a website provided by the tax department, which helps and guides you. They also have free phone support if you get stuck. (HMRC)
C) If you have very complex tax affairs, get an accountant to do it for you.

At no point is a normal person ever required to engage with a 3rd party to file their taxes... the US system is a joke!

So yes... some MBA has sat down and ran the numbers to see how many existing customers (who already have spent most of their money with Sonos, and will only be incrementally valuable) they will piss off, vs. how many will just roll over and buy all new stuff. It's a numbers game, and the only way we can punish them for being assholes is to ensure their assumptions are WAY OFF by boycotting them.

True... they only say that it will "affect your listening experience". So features will stop working, no security patches will be applied, and you can't add anything new to your existing system.

Sure it's not "bricked" in the technical sense, but it's basically consigned all old-ish hardware to the scrapheap unless you're willing to live with a slowly degrading and insecure system. :-/

First they provide shitty screens on their remote controls that fail just outside the warranty period, and then abandon them altogether so I'm forced to use my mobile to control things.

Now they intend to brick all of my amps, forcing me to upgrade my entire house. If they were customer focused, then they would introduce a "compatibility box" which will bridge the new and old worlds. That would keep my old kit working just fine, and allow them to use whatever processing power they claim to need. There's even a profit to be made on that, which I wouldn't object to.

I'll upgrade because I have no other option, but it will NOT be a SONOS system.

Submission + - Oracle Ties Previous All-Time Patch High with January 2020 Updates (threatpost.com)

bobthesungeek76036 writes: Not sure if this is good news (Oracle is very busy patching their stuff) or bad news (Oracle is very busy patching their stuff) but this quarterly cycle they tied their all time high number of vulnerability fixes released. And they are urging folks to not drag their feet in deploying these patches.

The software giant patched 300+ bugs in its quarterly update.

Oracle has patched 334 vulnerabilities across all of its product families in its January 2020 quarterly Critical Patch Update (CPU). Out of these, 43 are critical/severe flaws carrying CVSS scores of 9.1 and above. The CPU ties for Oracle’s previous all-time high for number of patches issued, in July 2019, which overtook its previous record of 308 in July 2017.

The company said in a pre-release announcement that some of the vulnerabilities affect multiple products. “Due to the threat posed by a successful attack, Oracle strongly recommends that customers apply Critical Patch Update patches as soon as possible,” it added.

“Some of these vulnerabilities were remotely exploitable, not requiring any login data; therefore posing an extremely high risk of exposure,” said Boris Cipot, senior security engineer at Synopsys, speaking to Threatpost. “Additionally, there were database, system-level, Java and virtualization patches within the scope of this update. These are all critical elements within a company’s infrastructure, and for this reason the update should be considered mandatory. At the same time, organizations need to take into account the impact that this update could have on their systems, scheduling downtime accordingly.”

Submission + - SPAM: FBI reportedly accessed locked iPhone 11 Pro Max with GrayKey third party tool 1

The Feds don’t seem to have much trouble breaking into devices when they have a warrant. So I’m forced to conclude that they want official backdoors built in — which opens everyone up to all kinds of easy attacks — to easily get into devices when they don’t have a warrant.
