Comment Honestly.... (Score 1) 103

I miss the days when Linux was an unapologetic UNIX clone and BSD wasn't as stale. If I'm going to run a big bloated *NIX desktop environment these days I'm just going to use a Mac. Fuck modern GNOME and KDE.

My typical desktop environment is just WindowMaker and a file manager. If I'm going to use X11, I'm going to use it properly and hand tune an environment I like.

I ran it on a 386DX/40 without much hassle. It could get a little sluggish in a couple spots but was actually not a bad experience. The Linux and Novell UNIXWare version was even pretty playable on my replacement 486 though just barely.

The crazy thing is now we can get similar performance in a $1 uC with anemic onboard RAM/ROM and a crippled address bus that's not externally available.

I seem to remember getting a lot of work done on a Mac IIci with a 25MHz 68030, 128MB of RAM and a couple SCSI drives. Even drove multiple monitors.

Why do we want to help bolster China's chip fabs with Russian customers? I want to see x86 lose market share to ARM but not this way.

It's not like the math needed for missile guidance is really that complex. We built guided missiles with far less CPU power than the average modern microcontroller.

No one tried to overthrow the government. They tried to keep someone they didn't like from taking the reigns very loudly while touring the building and a couple of them stole shit. They were deluded, full of shit and wrong....but that wasn't an insurrection. Barely qualifies as a riot.

The Civil War was an insurrection.

The Revolutionary War was an insurrection.

Spartacus led an insurrection.

WW2 vet GI's led an insurrection in Athens, TN.

Often, the difference between insurrection and a revolution is who wins and controls the narrative. We don't need a fucking Ministry of Truth. That will be the beginning of the end no matter how noble the intentions.

The same generation that will literally burst into tears because a "griefer" killed them in an online game without asking first.... then write blog posts and post videos about how awful, traumatic and sexist it was was that the game was played as intended....then have their viewers harass the game publisher....even when a single player mode in the same universe is available. And that's just a space trading sim. Kowtowing to social justice posers and professional victims just results in shitty games.

If you can't handle a fully clothed avatar "touching" your fake character or doing the teabag dance without crying, you are too fragile for an open communications platform or video games. A command to block users is all that is needed. Anything more is just further down the slippery slope. They will never stop until everything is sterile, soulless, unfun and totally "inclusive".
