I do appreciate that it makes sense for them from a business perspective, but previously Apple products, whilst expensive, have generally been over-specified, and thus continue to be usable for many years after purchase. 8GiB is a bit tight though... if they charged less for the entry level, non-upgradable machine... then perhaps that's useful, but otherwise, it seems unwise to buy the low-end hardware because it's still expensive!

On the face of it, this is terrible and we can all blame that individual.

But I have a suspicion that *many* people must've known that there was an issue and that at some point, it would be public. And in that context, I suspect that the CBE award was specifically so that that person could be thrown under a bus later?

Not that that individual doesn't have questions to answer for... but just I think there's prolly a lot of other people who are likely more culpable.

Funny that he called them "Communists" though... and he seemed *very* absolute that Communists == bad people who deserve to die.

Clearly the situation is more nuanced; it almost always is. The "vigilantes" might've been "protesters". But to be fair, likely there was a mix of people... but for that reason, just blank labelling everyone as a Communist is... kind of dumb really! And I'd hope ESR's red-mist has faded and perhaps the passing of time might allow him to see a bit more objectively?

But the thing I find really ironic is that Ballmer (and others) prolly thought ESR was a communist. Honestly, that *is* pretty funny really!

I still have, but is no longer my daily, a self-built ASUS P7P55D + Core i5 750 which I also originally got that in 2009. I only replaced it around this time last year. It was getting a little slow to be fair, but by the end I was running with an SSD as the primary boot device, 8GB RAM, and I'd added a USB-3 card.

I still have every Raspberry Pi I've every purchased (think there's about 10 of those now!), and I have an original 2012 model B with 256MB RAM running PiHole... I have had to replace the original PSU though as they don't last. I suspect one of my Pi's will be my longest lasting machine in the end.

Oh, I do have a 2007 polycarbonate MacBook as TFA mentions... but mine, despite not being used much, has a dead battery (unsurprising I guess), and the stupid audio ports have switched to optical mode... so have a red light flashing out of them.

In fairness to them, if they didn't prioritise commercial customers, it would've made the product not viable to these people which is a shame since they've made a point of producing the same product, for the same price, for at least X years precisely because that predictability is what makes the product perfect for commercial customers.

I totally agree and feel the pain of the current non-availability of Raspberry Pi's. It is *really* frustrating.

But I guess the current situation was rather difficult to foresee. We can hope that the situation will ease soon. (fingers crossed)

They just dropped their prices rather a lot which doesn't seem to support what you're saying.

Don't get me wrong Tesla still have value, but that value does seem to be diminishing right now. I suspect any ability to maintain share-price is a least in part to the idea "someone else" might buy Tesla out. If they don't get bought out, they need new product asap.
