I just retired after 44 years in construction. I was a metal stud framer/drywaller, hardly the highest paid trade on the job. Went from journeyman to foreman to project manager ( I hated that part of it). Along the way I learned how to draw plans and render drawings which kept me working as a link between a very big owner and their Architect for 11 years. Always worked, few layoffs. In the end I was paid very well with benefits plus a car and free gas. I saw a lot of young, highly educated people come and go, some were brilliant, most were not. I built many offices for start ups that faded just as fast as they started up. I still got paid. The point is that I was able to learn some technical skills on my own that made me more useful to somebody that had the funds to keep me going. I would encourage any young person with at least the intelligence to come to this website to consider a job in the trades, they need smarter people too. You will be paid well for your 8 hours, get the reward of seeing the tangible results of your efforts, and you still have plenty of free time to work on your game, code, rockets, Linux Desktop or whatever drives you.
