Comment Lets focus on tech not sociopolitical BS (Score 1) 113

Just because there is a bit of technology involved this qualifies the story as yet another slashdot item. I am sorry, but there is just too much political and cultural bullshit on this site these days. Like it wasn't bad enough when the Apple/PC crap was everywhere? Just stick to things that are developer and admin and engineering related. I can go to any news site for the nonsense and righteousness. I come here for tech.

But users are notoriously bad about their password hygiene

I resent that. I drop a Duo every morning. Sure I'm a but user. There is no way I dont clean up after. Did you ever pinch a loaf and not wipe? It gets pretty nasty back there real fast, and burns and itches. I would bet most people that use there buts to poo are good about there hygene.

Before Steve Jobs came back there was "Inside Macintosh" that was probably the best set of documents on a consumer OS. It helped me to become a pretty decent Mac developer. With the transition from Carbon to Cocoa "Inside Macintosh" was abandoned. The quality of developer mailings and resources dropped, and if you wanted to make the change you had to attend a "boot camp" (not free) and spend countless numbers of hours every week trying to learn a whole new way of doing something (that used to be documented and worked just fine, thank you very much). I feel like Steve Jobs abandoned a lot of good developers by remaking Apple as NeXT. Now I like developing in the Windows world (and love the hardware options, including Intel's NUC).

Comment Radio isn't Trump and you aren't Mainstream Media (Score 2, Insightful) 29

Surely someone can post something positive about this. Like the Mainstream Media and President Trump, you would think that the CIC hasn't done one thing, not one, positive. All I see here are petty gripes and grammar school comments.

Radio has a lot more to do with internet communications than most people realize. I don't think most of you commenting really care though. Radio "nets" have been around a lot longer than the Internet, and I'll leave it at that. Post something positive for while?

God how I wish I knew there was a limit to the slashdot username back in the day. The textbox was so huge and moist and inviting and ... it let me type the whole freaking thing in, for crying out loud!! So what about a short userid and a long meaningless string of characters and a ... suspiciously Roosky sounding last name?

IBM 360/370 systems are so cool. Unlike the PCs of today you could write things called channel programs that executed on the disk controller. You could customize/optimize the code to write out or read in data that is "tuned" to the rotation of the disk and move tracks or cylinders (vertical stacks of tracks) with amazing speed. The channels were processors themselves, to a degree, and controlling both your IO and your CPU was what made it all fun.
