Comment A bad mechanic blames their tools. (Score 1) 187

20k parts? Trivial! This tells me the business guys didn’t allocate the time to work in an Agile way with a skilled developer. Excel easily handles 1 million rows and more columns (fields) of detail than they need. Use forms for structure and pages with both tabular and graph reporting for impact. Even expedite workflows with timely detailed automated email generation. This manager might consider hiring a smart developer and working conscientiously with them in to iteratively increase progress towards achieving their business objectives.

Comment Safe LEO is a gift (Score 1) 15

The clean Low Earth Orbit space we use today may be a once in a civilization gift? Any conflict in space would probably lead to a Kessler Cloud of high velocity orbital shrapnel. The risk of collisions would render LEO orbits unsafe for a generation or more. Damn shame we couldn’t access space anymore because it’s likely a hypervelocity remnant of an old space ware debris is likely to take you out

A Linux based operating system loaded with python WIFI and IO pins.
It was a teachers dream. Serving LAMP with Maria Db. Working well in Africa and other places where Internet connectivity cannot be assumed, this web browser is nice but would be even better if this fine new code editor was local.

Comment Re:Should come as no big surprise... or JP-8 ? (Score 1) 62

Yes. Extra radiation exposure would be a risk . Another risk air crews and ground crews share in common is exposure to military jet fuel JP-8 , and its additives. The fuel itself is kerosene-like but is known to cause some other health problems. The carcinogenic effects of various additives to the fuel may still be understudied

Comment Original IBM PC after FORTRAN 360 punch cards. (Score 1) 523

Started in the basement of Gonzaga University as a high school student walking fortran code like an acolyte to the imposing counter where the sys op would offer my deck to the big IBM 360. Final Judgement issued by its awesomely noisy lineprinter. Then cameTymshare and corporate scale bills. Early Apples were fun. Until finally, the well launched IBM PC was the Aah ha! moment. Life-changing with its informative light blue cloth bound three ringed Technical manual ( ASCII Code table so useful ) Keyboard floppy drive CRT and chips you understood and owned.
No Sys Op and his altar at the end of the florescent lit shiny well waxed linoleum underground corridor .
No singing Modem and Bills. A box with a power supply, motherboard, speaker, and optional cards ( 64 KB, color screen) that I showed off to my Aunt Mary and family. Fun looking back!

Comment Smokescreen? Why is collateral required? What risk? (Score 0) 75

This commentary makes no trading or economic sense. Unless Robinhood was somehow short gamestop shares what risk does it as a broker intermediary have passing trade orders to others? Or is this a smoke screen to assuage hedge funds who were caught in a short squeeze? Really! Can you explain the risk to Robinhood of increased order flow and therefore revenue?

Comment Good luck flying in distant commercial aircraft! (Score 1) 119

As high powered laser beams propagate to greater distances into skies surrounding battlefields, protected places, or warships will the systems that target them make certain that targets in the background are not harmed by beams aimed at drones or missiles nearer to the laser source?

Comment When buffalo roamed (Score 1) 153

Long before the arrival of the first plow millions of buffalo in the midwest thundered above rich black soil that was alive, and up to six feet thick. The cover plants and micro biome sequestered huge amounts of Carbon. Today, the ability of soil to draw giga tons of CO2 from the atmosphere and sequester it in well tended living soil may be technology to remediate the build up of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion.
