No, it's different. Suicide rates are higher in more advanced societies.

Anecdotically, I grew up in the '80s in a very oppressive regime, endured many hardships and shortages of all kinds. But people weren't depressed. It's difficult to explain, but we were finding joy in the smallest things.

What you say was the initial assumption - that the pilots did not switch off the elevator trim motor. But the analysis of the black box showed that they did. However, once they switched to manual trim, they did not have enough authority to adjust the elevator, so they switched the motor back on, which again enabled MCAS.

It's been my experience as well.

People who say "java is slow" have never written any java code.

I recently needed to make a tool to process multi-GB text files. My first instinct was Python, but the performance was absolutely horrible. I then made it in C and optimized the heck out of it. I was quite happy but then, just for kicks, I wrote a Java version and I was surprised to see it outperform C by 15%!

Of course not. Read the conclusion of the article:

When the devices in your home and garage are managed by Google Amazon Microsoft Apple, you don’t have to worry about security. You don’t have to worry about updates. You don’t have to worry about functionality. You don’t have to worry about capabilities. You’ll just take what you’re given and use it the best you can. In this worst-case world, you wake up in the morning and ask Alexa Siri Cortana Assistant what features your corporate overlords have pushed to your toaster, dishwasher, car, and phone overnight. In the personal computer era you would “install” software. In the edge computing era, you’ll only use it.

I live in the EU.

Whenever I make an online purchase,
- I receive an SMS from the courier company with the delivery date and approximate time.
- Then I get a phone call from the courier to confirm the delivery time and place, reschedule if needed.
- I then receive the package and have to sign for delivery. Until I sign it off, there was no delivery.
- Oh, and most retailers accept cash on delivery, so there's an extra incentive for them, as for couriers, to deliver packages successfully.

Leaving packages on doorstep is unheard of.

I agree on the challenging part, but I think there's an "increased difficulty" official mod. I haven't tried it.

As for city development, the cities are relatively small because they effectively simulate every single citizen. No cheating. This is why even a high-rise building will have just 10 inhabitants. I think it's a more honest approach than artificially multiplying everything by 100 as Sim City was doing.

I agree with overqualifications, that area needs tweaking. I always had problems even with industrial zones as there weren't enough people willing to work there.

Carriers are part of the problem but manufacturers are to blame, too.

I have a Moto G LTE RETAIL. Lovely hardware. It's still stuck on 4.4.4. It's a retail model, I don't care about carriers (I'm in Europe, I always buy retail unlocked).

I got tired of waiting and installed Cyanogen 12.1 on it, which is based on Android 5.1. I'm quite happy with it.
