But I am massively disappointed by the fact that Google have erased the Nexus line and expect me to jump up to a top-tier phone...

In Android land, you get the flexibility to pick a whole selection of devices with personal customization. But it also means you get quite the trade-off. Cheap and you get bloat and no-update or Google-tier and you get expensive hardware and get updates. Compare to iPhone land, iPhone only gives you one option, Apple-tier expensive hardware and get updates. After all, if you want updates you need to pay devs to update your device somehow.

Depend on your preference, picking an iPhone might be your easiest and best choice at providing you long update cycle. But if you really want your current Nexus 5X to last a little longer, you could spend some time to install a custom rom still supported after the end of support from either xda-developers or lineageOS. If you donation or pay the devs there, they will be encouraged to continue to support your device, keeping it up to date.

There's Android One but after reading their website I still can't figure out exactly what the hell it is.

What is Android One - tl;dr devices where manufacturers have committed to give clean android updates to the device. As for how long, it will be at least 1.5 years after device launch.

You can buy them by clicking on the devices at the website. If not, you could just copy the device name and ebay / amazon it to Australia. It's not that hard if you really want one. Not to mention, they are cheaper than Pixel phones.

Pixel phone on the other hand is still directly supported by Google and get 2-3 years at device launch (1-2 years remaining).

The answer to that, as always, has been that you need to increase the level of education accordingly. Those who write and maintain AIs are going to have jobs.

I'm sorry, but that's a short term effect.

In long term, there will be no one to write and maintain AIs because by the time the AIs will be maintained by the AIs themselves.

This is fundamental danger of the AI the tech companies are trying to create, where the AIs learn on themselves just like humans, completely replacing humans and leaving them out of the loop.

Rest assured, humanity is unlikely to see their true AI overlord before the world ends. This is because the robots will wipe us out of our jobs before then.

Comment Wii U Failure and Switch Success (Score 1) 107

The Wii U main feature is that you can play on the Wii U gamepad screen instead of using the TV screen, but it's not really portable since it still needs the console. It essentially created a feature that has no practically use while other console Nintendo made were better. Why would anyone use the small gamepad screen at home when you could use the large TV screen? If gamers wanted living room TV gaming experience, they get a Wii. If they wanted it to be portable, they get a 3DS. Even the numbers explain it.

Also, Nintendo's attempt to put games on Wii U were mostly failure. This is not because the games on Wii U were bad, but the use of the gamepad (main feature) is still an impractical turd for most of those games. So any gamers who got the chance would buy the Wii or 3DS version game, skipping the Wii U version completely. To step right onto the Wii U gravestone, the rise of mobile game market didn't help drive Wii U sales at all. At worst, the mobile game market further reduced Nintendo overall potential new customers.

Switch on the other hand main feature is a portable console that can also be played using the TV screen. At the very least, this feature is a plus compare to the Wii and the 3DS. Here Nintendo did two things right.

Number one is drive up hype with the new game, Breath of the Wild, released on the Switch first. This works well because the game itself is good and game is what drive console sales after all.

Number two is console support for developers. For the first time, Nintendo made it easier for developers to make games on their console. This at least creates a level ground on par with the mobile game market which already has devices support for developers, and it quickest flooded the Switch store with a lot of games for gamers. Now all Nintendo needs to do is to keep up with the flow of game hypes with their exclusives, and they will continue to success.

She says it's torture, I say it's opportunity.
