Comment Airbnb's are great for tourists (Score 1) 137

Like always, too much of a idea good ends up having bad consequences. Airbnb's are great for large groups of people, especially families visiting a place. It is usually much cheaper and nicer to stay together in a single home/apartment for your holiday. Normally this works great but it backfires in very popular and expensive places like New York where it exacerbates a housing crises. The flip side is that all those tourists bring in money to the city supporting jobs and businesses.

I seriously doubt that Musk can pull this off without a nuclear power plant of some sort. Solar and batteries are far harder on Mars. While NASA has been working on this technology, I haven't seen anything from Musk about using it. Please correct me if I'm wrong and he has it in his plans.

The really nasty part of this argument is that the mortality rate is probably up at 5% without access to hospital standard health care. By which I mean access to pure oxygen. A "gentle" total infection rate gives 0.5 - 1.0% fatality rate. A New York City sized infection rate likely gives closer to 5%. This could be really, really horrible.

It's laughable to think that a Democrat would have done better."

It's not a matter of being a Democrat or a Republican. It's a matter of being Trump. The response I outlined what our Conservative government did in Australia. It is also what the Conservative government did in Germany. It's a matter of being competent. Conservatives in the USA should find someone competent to replace Trump.

She would have not screwed up the pandemic response team set up by Obama. She would have listened to her scientific advisors in January and got testing out in vast numbers in February. She would have expanded the scope of government-supported contact tracers to break infection chains. All sorts of useful, big government stuff.

She would have clearly explained the danger to the American public right from the start.

She would not have sent out SMS messages like these:

'The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant. Surgeon General, “The risk is low to the average American.”'

'So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!'

Australia closed it's borders when local community spread made up only 10% of the load. This gave Australian contact tracers enough breathing space to knock out the infection chains. That plus social distancing reduced the R0 to below 0.5. As a consequence Australia has 300 times less deaths than the UK and almost 1000 times less death than the USA.

Given this news, I'm sure the borders will be closed for a quite bit longer.

If instead you interpret those quotes to mean, "everybody, we have a major problem on our hands", you have a different interpretation of English idiom than I do.
