Submission + - Mastercard To Stop Processing Payments On Pornhub, Cites Unlawful Content (reuters.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Mastercard Inc said on Thursday it was ending the use of its cards on Pornhub after its investigation confirmed the presence of unlawful content on the sex videos site. Pornhub said on Tuesday it had banned video downloads and was allowing only certain partner accounts to upload content after a New York Times column reported that many videos posted on the adult website depicted sexual assault of children. The newspaper column had also described some videos on the site as recordings of assaults on unconscious women and girls. Pornhub has denied the allegations. Billionaire investor Bill Ackman asked Visa Inc to follow suit.

Submission + - Microsoft will start force upgrading Windows 10 for some users (theredmondcloud.com)

Ammalgam writes: Starting this month, Microsoft will begin forcing some users to upgrade to Windows 10 version 1909 or version 2004 if they don’t update their PC manually.

This is coming after Microsoft announced that it’s ending support for Windows 10 version 1903, including Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro.

If you’re on Windows 10 version 1903, you’ll be force upgraded to version 1909 later this month.

If you’re on Windows 10 version 1909, you’ll be forcefully upgraded to Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update) by the spring of next year.

If you’re still using last year’s Windows 10 versions, it’s better to attempt the upgrade manually.

You can learn more about Microsoft's notifications about the upgrade here.

Not in total disagreement with you but I wonder what basic criteria YOU use to distinguish a country as a "Super Power". I know that nuclear capability is one I would agree with. Perhaps the ability to project substantial and significant force world-wide would count. Not sure about population size or density.

For that reason, perhaps a sub-category might be appropriate:

Super Power
- USA
- Perhaps China
Power
- EU can certainly defend their portion of the continent but really can't sustain a force projection mission that is truly meaningful.
- Russia was there but still has not recovered all it's capabilities.
- India and Pakistan can nuke each other and a few surrounding countries but would never be a real threat to the USA or China.

Why do companies like Apple feel it is beneficial to move manufacturing to another country? There are many reasons of course but one of them is the cost of labor in the US. That requires a deeper dig then. Why is labor so expensive? It took years to create this issue and it will take years to get rid of it. But none of our elected officials, and those that put them there are willing to engage in the long-haul effort needed to fix the issue. Everyone just wants a quick fix or a Band-Aid and unwilling to sacrifice the resources needed. sigh.

Submission + - History of the American Energy System in One Chart (uchicago.edu)

BoredStiff writes: This energy Sankey diagram was published today by the University of Chicago, and shows the history of the american energy system in chart form, from 1800 to 2019. It is the:first attempt to put so much information about U.S. energy history in one place. This particular Sankey diagram shows the inputs and outputs for the U.S. energy system, measured in watts per capita. The left side of the chart shows where energy is coming from (coal, natural gas, or petroleum) and the right side shows what it’s being used for (transportation, agriculture, or home lighting and heating).

I couldn't say. Both my sisters were nothing short of unattractive. I suspect that a good portion of it comes from curious kids catching glimpses of their siblings or parents in home in various states of undress and it triggered something. But more likely I think it comes from a society that continues to discard old morality principles and now that we are approaching a point where truly nothing is restricted, the last remaining bastion of moral constraint is the forbidden fruit. Annnnd, humans are weak and foolish in that regard.

Ok, they need that much money because the materials are so much better, shame they don't practice good environmental protection policies outside the US.

You should read the NYT article. What it describes is at least three separate instances of missing children, some as young as 12 being "found" after they were seen in videos posted on Pornhub. One example: A missing girl is seen by one of her classmates after she was gone for a couple of years. The classmate reported it to LE and she was rescued. She was 12 when she was abducted.

I know that the super majority of videos posted with titles like incest or rape are actually actors. But pornhub and sites like it allow people to post videos and that is really the crux of the matter.

Submission + - Drug Reverses Age-Related Mental Decline Within Days (ucsf.edu) 3

fahrbot-bot writes: Just a few doses of an experimental drug can reverse age-related declines in memory and mental flexibility in mice, according to a new study by UC San Francisco scientists. The drug, called ISRIB, has already been shown in laboratory studies to restore memory function months after traumatic brain injury (TBI), reverse cognitive impairments in Down Syndrome, prevent noise-related hearing loss, fight certain types of prostate cancer, and even enhance cognition in healthy animals.

In the new study, published Dec. 1, 2020, in the open-access journal eLife, researchers showed rapid restoration of youthful cognitive abilities in aged mice, accompanied by a rejuvenation of brain and immune cells that could help explain improvements in brain function.

“ISRIB’s extremely rapid effects show for the first time that a significant component of age-related cognitive losses may be caused by a kind of reversible physiological “blockage” rather than more permanent degradation,” said Susanna Rosi, PhD, Lewis and Ruth Cozen Chair II and professor in the departments of Neurological Surgery and of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.
